Madeleine adjusted her sunglasses and turned up the volume. It had been a long day of driving and the sun was starting to melt Madeleine into her leather car seat. She had lived in California for most of her life and was no stranger to the sweltering heat, but being stuck in her car with only a faulty AC system to combat her dripping sweat was getting to be reasonably unbearable. Madeleine was only 30 minutes away from her new apartment, but she saw a Starbucks to her left and decided a quick stop was warranted.
Madeleine unconsciously tapped her foot as the lady in front of her gave the poor barista her order; Madeleine had worked a fair few barista jobs in high school and college and swore she'd never give an order so problematic. Finally, it was her turn.
"Hey, I promise mine won't be too complicated." She winked at the boy taking her order, he couldn't have been older than 17 and she felt more of a need to take pity on him. "Just an iced Americano with some cream, thanks."
After her coffee stop, Madeleine was back on the road. She was driving from her father's summer house in San Diego, all the way up to Beacon Hills. From what she could tell, Beacon Hills was a smaller town, located in a valley with a very suburban feel. Beacon Hills wasn't far from Sacramento- only a 30 minute drive- but it was still a fairly secluded town. The drive in total was around 7 hours, but Madeleine had stopped a few times and hit the usual bumper-to-bumper traffic in LA. All in all, she was beyond ready to get out of the car.
Thankfully the last half hour of her drive flew by quickly, and before she knew it, Madeleine was pulling into the parking lot of her new apartment complex. Her apartment, 11B, was in a central location in the town, close to the schools and the law office she would soon be working at. Only three blocks away, Madeleine was excited to have a job she could walk to.
Madeleine gratefully hopped out of her car and stretched her arms, being almost too excited to be out of the car to notice the sun beating down. That obviously didn't last long. It was already 6:50 PM, and Madeleine wanted to move everything into the apartment before the sun went down. She sighed as she looked at all the boxes piled in her car and hoped she could get it all done in an hour.
"Need a hand?" Madeleine whipped around to find a very tall and very handsome man, although a bit creepy.
Holy shit she thought. He was jacked.
"Oh, no thanks," she said. "I can manage." He might have been attractive, but Madeleine was still wary. He seemed to have come out of nowhere.
"Are you sure? I'm pretty strong, I don't mind." The man smirked as he saw Madeleine glance at his arms.
"No, really, I'm fine. Thanks for offering though." She smiled.
The man shrugged. "Suit yourself." Madeleine turned back to her trunk but looked over her shoulder when she heard him say his name. "Name's Derek."
"Madeleine," she responded, and he strolled away with the hint of a smile.

Madeleine woke up the next morning the sun streaming into her pathetically bare room. She had gotten all the boxes inside and collapsed on her mattress before she could unpack anything.
She sighed. "It's going to be a long day."
Several hours later, Madeleine had most of her furniture set up. The new apartment was lacking in decoration, as she had only brought the essentials of clothing and furniture, but it was starting to resemble a home. The kitchen was thankfully already assembled for her, and all she had to do was organize her cooking tools and utensils into the drawers and cabinets, but it was seriously bare in the food department. She had brought a box of goldfish with her for the drive and it was the only thing sitting in her pantry. Time for a grocery run, she decided.
Madeleine grabbed her sunglasses and hopped in the car, immediately blasting the AC. She had expected it to be a little hotter than San Diego, considering she didn't have the ocean breeze to cool her down, but she didn't expect it to be this beastly.
She quickly found the grocery store, ecstatic to find the Trader Joe's only a six minute drive from her apartment, and grabbed her bags from her trunk. Madeleine went inside and, delighted by the completely functional AC, looked for some eggs.
"Hey." She looked up to see none other than the man from the previous night.
"Derek," she nodded. "You stalking me now?"
"Just grocery shopping." He held up his basket, which had only a bunch of bananas and bag of lettuce inside.
"Right, well, don't let me slow down your shopping trip," Madeleine chuckled lightly to herself.
Derek looked at her like he wanted to say something else, but decided against it, and gave her a small smile and went on his way.
"So weird," Madeleine said quietly to herself, oblivious to the fact that Derek heard her as well.
