chapter 1~being human.
I drove slowly up to the school in my new fiat 500. I frowned. I really didn't want to have to face everyone. Not since I broke up with Jeremy. I hadnt spoken to anyone since it happened and I didnt want to either. As I pulled up, hoping I was unnoticed, Caroline came running over with a fake smile on her face. I took out the car keys, got out, locked the car and mirroring Caroline's fake grin, I approached her. "Hey Marissa!" she said, hugging me. "You never called all summer", her face turned serious. "Look I know things are awkward with you and Jeremy, but trust me, just because Elena's his sister, shes not mad. She could never be mad at you". "Its not that. Its just that Jeremy was u sweet to me but it just wasnt working. I guess I just feel bad for him", I sighed. "Come on." said Caroline, "Bonnie's waiting."
I made it through the first 3 classes avoiding Jeremy but on my way to english 4th period, I was laughing with Vicki and I walked into him by accident. I started to appologise, but as soon as I saw who it was, all I could do was give a sort of smile. He shook his head, and walked away. That was the last I saw of him that day.
"Hey Marissa!" called Elena, "Come sit!" There was a spare seat between her and Bonnie at the lunch table so I joined them. "Hey guys", again with the fake smile. "Whos this?" I asked, smiling at a VERY attractive guy, seated next to Elena. He had soft, mid-brown hair and shiny green eyes. "Stefan" smiled Bonnie, "Elena's new boyfriend". "Well HELLO!" I giggled, "its nice to meet you. Im Marissa". He laughed.
After lunch, Amy and I went to the library to study for history. Mr Saltzman had insisted that we did so because we'd missed some of the work when our French class was on their annual trip to Lyon. I had free periods for the rest of the day so I planned to stay and study. When it came to last period, Amy left as she had art to attend. An hour after the bell, I packed away my books, left the library and got into my car. I needed coffee and gas so I drove just out of Mystic Falls to the nearest gas station and got what I needed(I ended up buying ice-cream too). As I returned to my car, I noticed a man was leaning against my car. I approached cautiously. "Er, hi." I began, "Can I help you sir?" I was begining to seriously worry. There were no cars in sight and the area around the gas station was deserted. So how'd he get here? "Hi." he said without lifting his eyes to me, "Im Stefans brother. Damon. Sorry if I startled you, that was not my intention". "Its fine but how the hell did you get out here?" I asked, a little more relaxed. "Oh, er, a friend dropped me off after we'd been at his place. I was about to call a cab when I spotted you. Any chance I can hitch a ride?" I could see his eyes now. They were the most beautiful shade of blue Id seen. "Oh. Sure why not?" And with that, we got in the car and I dropped him off at the old Salvatore Boarding House. When I pulled into the drive, Damon began speaking again, "thanks", he said, "I hope this doesnt seem too forward but you're just so pretty. Would you like to meet up for a coffee or something sometime?" I smiled , "Sure. Id love that". Damon kissed me softly on the cheek and left. Within a few hours I was home, bathed and in bed with all my homework done.
The next morning, Bonnie and I drove to school together. When we arrived, as usual Caroline and Elena were waiting by our lockers. As we walked over to join them, Stefan came up and asked me for a quiet word, "um sure" I sighed. "Listen, I think you should stay away from my brother. Trust me, he's no good". "Well I dont see whats so bad about him. And apart from anything else, I can see who I wish to see". I replied sternly, "Just be careful", he warned. I left him staring after me with a regretful look on his face. I wasnt letting anyone tell ME what to do.
I barely got through the day. I couldnt get stefan's image out of my mind, telling me to be careful. At first I did find it strange the way Damon had appeared while I was paying for gas without me even noticing a car pull up but after that, he was nothing but polite and he didnt worry me in the slightest. So why was I so worried? When the bell rang, I ran out of school and drove home alone as Id already seen Bonnie leaving with Amy and I knew I wasnt leaving her stranded. As soon as I got to the front door of my house, I noticed a note stuck to it. It read; '555 137 give us a call. -damon x'. I smiled beside myself and went straight in to my room to call him. After just 3 rings he picked up, "hey I got youre note", I said casually, "why'd you need me to call?". Damon laughed, a low, soft sound that made me smile, "How 'bout that coffee?"..
