Today - Day 1

We were returning home from school on our school bus. My friend, Alica had been very quiet and reserved all day.

Something is on her mind. She is trying to say something but struggling to form words.

"You were very down today, Alica. Is something on your mind?" I finally asked her. She didn't reply.

I thought so. Something is bothering her.

"Last night, I had a dream..."

I was looking out of the window. Her words startled me for a second. I looked at her face. It was paining her, to tell the truth.

"I saw my relative ..... she said goodbye."

"And?" I slowly questioned when she didn't continue.

Alica played with the pleats of her skirt, opened her mouth to say something then shut it again.

What is bothering her so much?

I squeezed her hand to let her know that I was there for her.

"In the black and white background of my dream, she waved me goodbye. Then walked to a streak of light and merged with it."

I did not get the whole picture but looking at her, I tried to be patient.

Surely, this can't be the whole story.

"Um..., she died this morning."

"Oh!" I was at a loss for words. "Were you ...."

"She was old but her death was sudden. She died of a heart attack." There was silence again. "We weren't close or anything. Is this normal?"

"Yea, I guess. You don't know when someone might die, what might happen to someone....." I didn't realize she was staring at me. "What? Did I say something wrong?"

"I know people die. I meant the dream."

"Oh!" I felt like an idiot. "Don't worry about the dream. Maybe she liked you and so came to say goodbye. You ever had such dreams before?"

"No", she replied meekly after thinking. "Not that I remember."

"Then relax. Don't stress about it."

"Ok", she seemed a bit relieved.

I hugged her. "You feel better?"

She nodded.

After a week - Day 8

"I had a similar dream", she said in frenzy.

It was 5:30 in the morning. The sun was barely up.

"What?" I was reluctantly pulled out of my dreams by her phone call.

"I am very scared. What should I do?"

"Relax. Nothing has happened yet, right?" I said between yawns.

"But it was the same dream. My uncle waved at me smilingly and walked towards the light. He also didn't say anything. Olivia! I'm so scared. What if this one also comes true?"

"Will you calm down? It's just a dream. You're overthinking. Go back to sleep. Take some rest."

"I hope you are right."

I met her at school. She clearly couldn't rest. She was edgy and worried throughout the day.

Do her dreams really mean anything? I hope not!
