The two devils fused into one, just as they had split. In the pale blue moonlight that filtered through her windows, Maya saw their mouth curving into a wicked malicious smile. Soon they evaporated into the thin air.
The five feet six-inch figure was traumatized to her core. Maya was trembling like a leaf. Her palms and forehead were coated with sweat. Her heart was hammering in her chest. Paralyzed with fear, Maya fell to the ground. She laid on the floor quivering with fear and pain like a mass of nerves.
Maya was still holding the scroll, staring at the darkness engulfing her.
"I need to do something about this." Maya tried to calm her senses.
Maya tried to stand up but stumbled and fell. She tried again and slowly made her way towards her room. Suddenly a hand appeared from somewhere behind her. Maya flinched and gave a low cry. She turned and came face to face with the devils again.
"We forgot to take this with us," smirked the creature. Terror took hold of Maya once more.
The devils brought his face closer to Maya and slowly took the scroll from Maya's hand. They were savoring every moment of horror and pain that appeared on Maya's face. After a while, the devils merged with the darkness once more. Maya stood gaping at the red gleaming eyes of the devils as it dissolved in the infinite.
"Your brother has very little time left in this mortal world. The next time you visit your brother, it will be in the grave".
The devils warned Maya. She could hear their voices echoing in her ears. Their evil laugh seemed to be emitting from the walls. Or was it real? Maya couldn't tell the difference anymore.
The devils held Maya's younger brother's soul captive and the only way to free it was to replace it with someone else's.
BUT WHOSE?
Maya did not have the answer.
The devils had given Maya a taste of what it felt like to be in his clutches, what her brother was going through every second. Tears blinded her vision as the memories came flashing back.
It felt like a thousand knives had pierced the skin, slowly twisting, erasing every thought from your head.
Maya had fallen to the ground, wriggling in pain screaming, begging them to stop. With each passing second, the pain seemed to amplify, stealing her consciousness.
The very projection of the past left her numb and exhausted.
"Those monsters enjoyed seeing me in pain. They laughed and sniggered when I begged them to stop the torture," Maya said to the walls wiping her tears as more memories came back.
''And here she is, demanding us to free her brother when all she cares about is her OWN flesh," snorted one twin.
The second eyed the figure lying helplessly on the floor and said, "We were ready to negotiate but somebody backed off."
It was true. The devils had made an offer.
They were ready to let go of her brother's soul only if Maya was ready to surrender hers or provide them with another soul.
And it was also true that she had backed off.
A sense of disgust cornered her. She didn't want to lose to those creatures of the night. But what could she possibly do? Maya stood still staring at the darkness laughing at her.
Maya considered the second option.
