chapter 10

❛you and I
and nobody else❜
—AFTER a long time of thinking about what his brother said, Tsukishima came up with a plan to just ask Yamaguchi to come over and he'd spill the news to his mother at dinner. It wouldn't be treated as a big deal and he could go back to the way he'd been with his boyfriend before telling his mother about them. It shouldn't have gone off the rails, but it did.
Tsukishima's day started off fine. He'd walked to Karasuno with his hand linked with Yamaguchi's, they'd been able to press a quick kiss before heading to their first class, and no one bothered the blond. It was as if everyone got the ever-so-loud hint that Karasuno's tallest player didn't want to be bothered or talked to unless you were a green-haired boy with freckles and an adorable smile.
The time he had between classes was spent with Yamaguchi and Yachi — her finding out about the two by Yamaguchi explicitly telling her a couple minutes beforehand— and lunch Yamaguchi dragged him to sit with the volleyball guys. It wasn't too bad, Tsukki had Yamaguchi next to him and leaning on him comfortably. Even Hinata and Kageyama's bickering didn't bother the blond too much.
Tsukishima only had to bite, "shut up, the both of you!" twice before they quieted and instead turned drinking their milk into a competition. Yamaguchi pressed a soft hand to Tsukishima's thigh and stared at him with with deep in his eyes. Tsukishima mentally replied, I'm fine, Yama.
Practice wasn't too trying, but Tsukishima wasn't in the best of moods either. They'd be let off easy for once and Tsukishima sat against the wall a little nervous. He was changing out of his practice sneakers, untying them ungodly slow, and thinking of a way to ask Yamaguchi to stay over. It wasn't any different, but it was in a way.
His back ached from where he was hit with a ricocheted ball from Nishinoya fooling around. But, that slipped from his mind as his boyfriends nimble fingers tugged at the roots of his hair.
"Let's go, Tsukki." Yamaguchi beamed, grabbing for Tsukki's hands. The blond intertwined them as he stood up and tried getting rid of the bad mood. Any other time he would have basked in it, but he didn't want to ruin Yama's night.
The dusk air flowed around them and cooled off their sweaty bodies. Most of the guys walked in front of the two boys, but their captain and vice captain stayed behind. Even Tsukishima could tell they were flirting, Suga's cheeks were tinted red and Daichi had a proud and warm smile on his face at the reaction.
"Suga and Daichi are flirting," the middle blocker blandly states and awaits for Yamaguchi's reaction. He widened his eyes and sneakily looked over their touching shoulders to their teammates.
The green-haired server cooed, then turned at their designated turn. He waved at everyone and caught the smirk from Suga. Each walked away and Tsukishima opened up.
He came out with, "Yamaguchi, stay for dinner tonight."
His boyfriend shrugged nonchalantly and they walked the rest of the way silently. Before opening the door though, Tsukishima pushed Yamaguchi against it and connected their lips. He tried getting rid of the nerves through that way, but he just seemed to heighten them since anyone could see them if the looked hard enough. Yet, a small portion of both boys didn't care at that fact.
They continued to kiss until Tsukishima collected himself. He smiled down to his best friend and boyfriend and admired the flush on Yama's checks, plus the dilated pupils in his eyes. A few seconds were needed so they could catch their breath, then Tsukishima led them inside and called out for his mother. They stood with their bodies close enough to not be friends, but they weren't clasping hands to make it obvious.
"Yamaguchi is staying for dinner."
And that's where the plans went off the tracks. Tsukishima brushed off his mom's warning to keep the door open, closing it behind Yamaguchi. They sat on the blond middle blocker's bed to do their homework, and Tsukishima continued to help Yamaguchi with his math homework.
Once his mother was finished with making food, Tsukishima prepared himself for the inevitable scolding that'd come from his mom about closing the bedroom door. He stayed expressionless and Yamaguchi apologized. She left and Tsukishima set his hand on Yama's lower back when he softly murmured, "you didn't have to apologize."
Yamaguchi's hazel eyes fell to his shuffling feet and he mumbled, "but I felt bad."
They walked to the table and Tsukishima's hand left Yama's body before the were in front of his family. They sat on their knees at the table, a plate with Omurice in the center. The green-haired server thanked Mrs. Tsukishima and waited for the family to eat first, then he dug in.
Around halfway through eating his meal, Tsukishima swallows his food, taking a sip of his water, then nonchalantly stated, "I'm dating Yamaguchi."
He acted as he usually would, but his heart was on the floor and beating as fast as a racehorse, and Tsukishima could feel the back of his neck growing warm. Beside him Yamaguchi stilled and when Tsukishima glanced over his face was bright red and his eyes were stuck on his food.
Then, in Tsukki's mind, everything went wrong. His mother's head shot up and she stared into her son's eyes, every emotion playing across her face. She looked like she was going to burst from happiness, but then her emotions flipped like a switch and a stern look came over her.
She pointed her plastic knife at her son. "Your door stays open, Kei—you understand. Nothing like what you just did. And I'll save you the talk since you're old enough to already know everything."
Akiteru covered his laugh with a cough and had to take a sip of water to wash down his egg. Tsukishima glared at him and whined, "can we just let it go. I won't do anything here with Yama." He knew that was a lie, but his mom didn't need to know that.
Fortunately she let the subject go, and the two boys left with a quick parting. Tsukishima softly slid his door shut despite the pleading look Yamaguchi gave him. He shrugged it off and laid on his bed, coaxing his boyfriend to lay next to him.
He whispered into the calm atmosphere, "we're not doing anything. Plus, she'll get over that stupid rule when she realizes how dumb it is."
With a roll of his eyes Yamaguchi laid down, squeezing between Tsukki's side and the wall. He curled around him and slid an arm under the blond, slotting a leg between Tsukki's as well. One of the blocker's hands found itself weaved through the fluffy locks. Each closed their eyes and Yamaguchi fell like a flash, so Tsukishima laid on his bed enjoying his presence and touch. He liked the way Yamaguchi's body seemed to fit around his, the way his small hands curled a bit of Tsukki's shirt into a ball, and the way his face relaxed even more.
Yamaguchi's eyelashes seemed long in the shadows, brushing against his beautifully freckled cheeks, and his thin eyebrows weren't worried. His lips were parted slightly and quiet sighs were emitted and Tsukishima could feel them through his shirt. He knew at that moment he was slowly falling in love with Yamaguchi Tadashi, and he would willingly let himself be in Yama's orders.
But no sooner had Tsukishima let his eyes fall shut, footsteps sounded through the hallway and the blond knew what was coming, but he didn't want it to. His mother's voice pierced through the walls and the hand under Tsukishima pushed into his back while Yamaguchi repositioned himself. Now, he was basically laying on top of the middle blocker, but his right hip and leg were still on the bed.
"Kei! What did I say about this door?" His mother's blond hair and face came into sight as she slid it open. Tsukishima groaned and rolled his eyes without opening them. But, he turned to look over expectantly at his mother.
He grumbled loud enough for her to hear, "we obviously aren't doing anything, Mom. Are you gonna have me keep it open at night too when Yama sleeps over?"
He seemed to hit a kink in her rule, and she narrows her eyes but closes the door and turning off his light. While having a bit of trouble, Tsukishima ended up successfully covering them with his comforter and set his glasses on his bedside table, falling asleep next to his warm and angelic boyfriend.
