"He...along WITH CHERYL have been helping me to start up something similar but new in place of SpeakEasy! I didn't want my dad to find out shut it down before it started...so we have to meet discreetly!" Veronica said sipping her milkshake. Betty looked at Veronica sympathetically and back to Archie who looked like he had just witnessed a murder. Archie couldn't comprehend anything; he was gobsmacked by his own behaviour. He assumed Veronica might be going away from him just from what he had seen, he hadn't ask about it either and top of that he was pushing her away as a result of his stupidity. All the things she had done for him, the support to him...every help...every time she made him smile. He closed his eyes trying to control the urge to slap himself until Betty's voice distracted him again.
"V, why didn't you say anything before? We would have helped in any way we could too!" Betty said holding Veronica's hand. Veronica smiled and leaned towards her "I really didn't want to drag you into this fight against my father... you all have your hands full... Archie with the community centre... you and jug with your breakup...Kevin with Mr. Honey..." Betty smiled again and hugged Veronica, who happily hugged her back. The boys watched the girls being supportive especially Archie who was trying to calm down a hurricane between his heart and mind; he slowly put on a smile making his decision.
Archie walked out of pop first, finally feeling the air hit his lungs, he hadn't realised how suffocating the entire conversation was until he breathed the air outside. A pair of hands circled around Archie's waist "Penny for your thoughts Archikins??" Veronica smiled from behind his back. Archie caught her hands and turned himself towards her looking serious, "I hope so too!" he said looking serious making Veronica instantly worry. "Archie are you okay? You've been awfully quiet from before...I'm sorry I didn't say..." Archie cut her in the middle by leaning in and kissing her forehead. Veronica smiled at Archie "what was that for?" Archie finally smiled.
"Do I need a reason to kiss you?" he asked casually making veronica laugh, she circled her hands around his waist again this time facing front. Archie rubbed her back "I'm so sorry Ronnie...for being immersed in my own problem..." he didn't know what to say...and what and all he had to apologize for. Veronica looked at Archie with a sweet expression and hugged him "Its okay Archiekins! You know I love you!!" Archie stood hesitantly.
Usually he would just say those three words but now even though his mind is telling him to say it his heart in not in that place. He just hugged her back tight, making his mind up for the nth time...that he would choose Veronica. He somehow put a smile on his face while hugging her even though he was feeling a little weird on his stomach as if he was doing something different. He opened his eyes and spotted 3 pair of eyes on him. Veronica still had her eyes closed holding on to Archie while he raised his head seeing his best friends standing at the door of pop's diner smiling at the couple.
He smiled seeing Kevin have his arm around Jughead, Jughead smiled chewing on his bubblegum and finally his eyes settled on Betty. His smile dropped, Betty was smiling at them which hurt Archie more; his heart pricked seeing Betty smile at him like that and by now he was used to it...he felt the same every time he saw Betty and Jughead together; fortunately or unfortunately it was the same for Betty.
Archie and Betty were walking back home, with Veronica tagging along with Archie. They both walked in silence hearing Veronica talk about recent activities with Cheryl and Reggie. Veronica noticed Betty's silence and hesitantly asked "Are you Okay, B?" Archie looked at Betty's face who looked puzzled at the question. "Of course I am V! Why are asking like that??" she asked making Veronica grab her hands and look at her sympathetically. Veronica rubbed her hand "Because this is the first time you saw Jughead...after he started dating!" Betty smiled at veronica and side hugged her.
Betty leaned back "I'm fine V! I really am...just because we broke up doesn't mean I can't be happy for him... we parted in good terms this time!" Archie watched Betty's expression without blinking checking to see if she was hiding any pain behind her brave face but she wasn't...she was being honest. Betty was happy for Jughead, she initially feared that Jughead might go distant from the group but seeing how he's still the same calmed her and made her happy. "I'm happy for him...and I have you guys to give me company!!" she said cheerfully making Veronica smile "Of course...we're always here for you! right Archikins?" she said looking Archie who nodded still looking at Betty.
Veronica smiled looking down totally missing Archie whisper "Always!" looking at Betty, who caught him staring at her seriously. She suddenly felt a strange feeling inside her but somehow put a smile on her face, gave him nod and turned towards the road. Betty intentionally remembered the scene of Archie and Veronica hugging to push the feeling back inside; she was very well used to doing that since the start of their high school. She learnt to force back any feeling she had for Archie but once in a while it always crawled back...especially every time she was worried for him.
She shook her head and smiled at her happy friends "So any word?" Veronica's words brought her focus back at present, "What word?" Betty asked completely lost. Archie also looked at veronica confused, whose eyes were focused on Betty "from the guy on the trip...you said you guys had become close!" she said making Archie turn at Betty feeling a new dose of jealousy course through. Betty rolled her eyes "No I didn't..." she said smiling at Veronica's mischievous face; while Archie relaxed hearing it. Veronica jumped in front of Betty, "C'mon B! Don't tell me you're not interested in the guy...you yourself said he was handsome, well built, was sweet, kind and funny!" Archie looked at Betty, who just laughed rather than denying it. Archie answered "C'mon Ronnie! Let her be..." he pulled Veronica back to her place between him and Betty.
Veronica pouted towards Archie "Archie...she really did describe him like that...Betty?" she raised her voice calling her. Betty looked at Veronica "Yes I did...he is all of that..." Veronica looked at Archie pointing at her, Betty raised her voice again completing the sentence "...and he is just a friend!!" she said narrowing her eyes on Veronica. "For now!! Who knows about tomorrow?" Veronica teased earning a small jab from Betty's elbow making both the girl laugh while Archie was brooding silently. Archie could feel his resolve shaking seeing how he was feeling jealous of someone he's never met; he tightened his hands around Veronica's and calm his urges.
A few steps from both the houses, Veronica noticed someone outside of Betty's home but couldn't make out since the person had his back towards. She first thought it was Charlie but the striking brown hair was a dead giveaway of not being Charlie. She finally brought both Betty and Archie's attention to the person "Hey B, who is that person outside your house?" just as they approached Betty's home. Betty took a step forward to get a good view of the person but it looked like he was talking in the phone making it hard for them to see any part of his face. Archie spoke "Where you expecting any guests Betty?" he asked turning Betty's attention to him just as the person turned towards them.
Veronica, who was the only one concentrating at the person, dropped her jaw towards the floor when she saw the person turn. While Betty who was facing Archie nodded a 'no' and looked at Veronica shocked expression "V, Are you okay?" she asked. Veronica nodded her head "No I'm not but...you wouldn't be either..." she said pointing towards the Betty's home. Both Betty and Archie turned to be greeted by handsome man, who had just looked up from his phone. Archie held Veronica's hand firmly already feeling insecure about the guy in front of them, both failed to notice the surprised expression Betty face.
She finally smiled so did the guy in the checked shirt tucked in his jeans, "Matt??" she exclaimed smiling making Veronica and Archie look at Betty. Archie looked back at Veronica whose face changed from surprise to a big smile which usually didn't mean good things. But before he could ask Veronica, Betty ran up to the man to Archie's surprise, "oh my god!!" she exclaimed before leaping in for a hug while the person hugged her smiling. Archie's hand automatically freed itself from holding to Veronica's due to the immense amount of shock and jealously coursing through his body.
