Scene 3

(The next morning; Lights up; It is the same setting as Act I, scene I; Crystal walks in stage right to center stage; she arrives at the neighborhood; Looking around she notices all the houses are only two colors)

Crystal: This neighborhood is crazy! Having only a pink or yellow house, what were these people thinking? I mean, what neighborhood only paints their homes two colors?

(Milo walks in stage right; comes up behind her)

Milo: Hello, what can I do for you?

(Crystal jumps in surprise; Looking at him; Both are center stage)

Crystal: My you frightened me!

(She suddenly realizes there's something familiar about him; Shaking herself)

Milo (Laughing): Sorry, that wasn't my intention. (Clears his throat) My name is Milo, and what's your name pretty lady?

Crystal (Giggle; Straitening up): Crystal.

Milo: That's a lovely name! And it sure fits you because your fur is as white as snow. (Play bows) But anyway, ruff, ruff, ruff! It's not every day I see a dog in my neighborhood! All the ones I know are kept inside.

(She glances at him; Licking one paw she draws it over her left ear)

Crystal: Oh I'm not a dog, I'm a cat; (Looking away) and how unfortunate for you.

(Milo straightens up)

Milo (Confused): A cat you say? (Pause) Ha ha ha.

(Crystal looks at him)

Crystal (Angry): What's so funny about who I am? You're a cat to you know!

(Realizing he shouldn't have laughed)

Milo (Serious): No I'm not! I'm a dog!

Crystal (Sighs/Calmly): Listen Milo, do you want to go for a walk in the woods where we can talk more private? Big neighborhoods like this make me feel on edge; you never know what sort of people you might meet. You see, I'm an alley cat and prefer places where there aren't as many people.

Milo (Happy): Sure! But you don't have to be afraid here. Everyone is so nice!

Crystal: Maybe to a house cat. For strays like me though, we don't mix well with others. We prefer are freedom over captivity. There are some of us though, that would like nothing better than a nice home with a nice family; cats who would love to be adopted.

Milo: I understand. So anyway, follow me! I know just the spot where we can go!

(Both walk offstage left)

(Lights fade out)
