— PROLOGUE,
the silver barrel.— DETROIT, 2038.
HAVE YOU EVER given much thought into how you would die? The idea may sound daunting at first, but it was a natural human thought. The idea of how one will eventually leave the world surrounding them. For millenniums, humans have thought of death in many different ways, each generation treating it slightly differently. Some mourn, some celebrate. Some fear Death, while others greet it as if it were an old friend.
Avery Aplin was stuck in between.
The brunette detective felt as if she had already entered limbo. She was being torn between two worlds. Two very different worlds, and yet, they were similar in so many more. It was her own living Hell, and yet she was still here. Breathing.
Avery Aplin could still feel everything around her. She could still feel the cool winter wind in her hair, tangling all around her body. She could still smell the metallic smell that blood gave off. Hell, she could still see her surroundings.
Most of all, she could feel the silver barrel planted firmly to her temple.
The cool metal sent shivers down her spin as she stood with her dark eyes closed, her body trembling ever so lightly. She pictured herself to look like a humming bird. It was a silly comparison, but it eased the fear. Yet she couldn't stop thinking of what would happen next.
The world would go black, she was sure of it. Everything around her would enter a void and cease to exist. She would no longer exist. How would she even know what to expect? Was there a white light ready to welcome her? Was it just black? Would she feel everything and then nothing all at once?
Death frightened her. Yet she had already accepted her fate. Her forever doomed fate.
She wanted to cry for help. Cry and hope someone would hear her. But instead, all that escaped her lips was a soft whimper as the barrel pressed harder into her throbbing temple.
This was it. This was the end of Avery Aplin. She did not want to leave. No, not yet. She had tried to fight, but the man holding the gun to her head had been stronger. He had outwitted her and now here she was, sending herself to the slaughter. It was not her time. She refused to believe that this was all life was willing to give her. But deep down, she was ready. She was waiting for her final moment.
The sound of the safety clicked. The sound ringing through her ears, echoing over and over again in her mind. Wincing at the sudden movement, she let out a shaky breath as she allowed a smile to cross her lips one last time. It wasn't strong, but it was enough to show that she was as ready as she would ever be.
And so her teary eyes opened, and she spoke. Her voice as calm as summer winds but holding the emotions of April rain.
"It's okay."
It was okay.
