He left. I saw that as an opportunity to waste the rest of class getting to know Perejil and Molly.
"She's so smart, she has a full schedule you know? I thought I was the only junior with one," Molly told Perejil.
Perejil turned to me, "You seriously have a full schedule?"
"Yeah?" I wondered why it was so confusing.
"Did Boston have Junior/Senior Open?" Perejil asked me, but looked at Molly.
"What's that?" Boston did not have that.
"A horrible thing that no one should take," Molly butted in quite clearly.
"A beautiful thing Skipper," Perejil took my schedule, "Go to the office, drop art, and you can go home for the day early.
"See? How dumb is that? You would never want to do that, Skip. You're too put together," As much as I liked art, I already had my credit, and I liked my bed more, "Plus Perejil and I both have Art with you."
The bell rang, "I'll see you guys tomorrow." I ran out of the room and Molly stood slack-jawed.
The office was backed up, but Kathleen Pavagi saw me and said she had me covered. So I left the school on my bike. And oh my god if Texas had normal weather that would have drastically improved my life. Because by the time I got home I was drenched in sweat. Or maybe it was just the humidity clinging to me.
I was home alone once again, and my dad said he'd order me pizza, but that he'd be staying overnight in Houston. I immediately stripped off my clothes and took a shower. My mind started to wander, and I wondered whether Georgia and Matt had actually slept together. They flirted, sure, but they also had lost contact over the year he was gone. And that's just insane in this day and age. I also thought about when Matt would text me. He hadn't given me his number, so I couldn't text him first. Not that I would. I just wished that I wasn't so hopelessly obsessed with him. I didn't even like him that much. I got out of the shower and got dressed.
Once I climbed up to my room, I checked to see if we'd been emailed our assignment yet. Nothing. Which meant that I would not be hearing from Matt that night. So I turned on some Arrested Development and lived my life.
It was about 10 pm and I'd almost finished rewatching the first season of Arrested Development when my phone buzzed.
Unknown Number: Margaret
My heart leapt. It was him.
Me: who is this?
Unknown Number: Dont be stupid Margaret. You know its Matt.
Caught in the act.
Me: do you know what our english assignment is?
Unknown Number: No.
Me: what do you want then?
Unknown Number: To talk to you. I like talking to you Margaret.
I knew this was one of his games. But I was overjoyed. He said he liked to talk to me after all. I waited a minute before replying.
Me: you're supposed to call me Skip.
Unknown Number: In public, Margaret.
I remembered why I hated him.
Me: do you have me in your phone as Skip?
Unknown Number: No but I can put you in as that. But you have to put me in as something I want.
Me: what
Unknown Number: Put me in as Babe. Emojis are optional but suggested
My stomach churned. That was too far. Imagine if he texted me when my dad was around.
Me: not happening
Unknown Number: Babe. Come on.
Me: that's absolutely ridiculous.
Unknown Number: No it's not. It just shows I can predict the future.
Me: wdym
Unknown Number: That you'll call me Babe someday soon.
He was smooth, I had to give him that.
Me: fat chance.
Unknown Number: Do it, or I wont call you Skip or Margaret, I'll call you Babe.
Me: now that's just straight up blackmail.
Unknown Number: I don't know why you wouldn't want to call a dreamy boy Babe
Me: i will do anything other than change your contact name to babe.
Unknown Number: Anything (;
Me: within reason
Unknown Number: Like going to my first football game?
Way more reasonable than expected.
Me: yes, actually
Unknown Number: omg Babeeee. I love that youre coming to support me
Me: youre actually forcing me to come watch you
Unknown Number: You could at the very least play along
Me: fine
I'd play his game for a minute.
Unknown number: So I'll see you in the front row next Friday? I'll score for you
Me: omg of course babe !! xoxo youre the hottest person ever and so amazing at football !!
Unknown Number: I actually think I'm in love with you Margaret.
I left him on read.
