"Hey," someone said from behind me, making me jump. "Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you" I turned around to see a tall pirate with blue eyes and black hair smiling at me. He looked to be about 6'1 and had broad shoulders. "It's fine. It's my fault for not noticing you come up the stairs," I said, waving off his apology. "You did look pretty lost in thought," he said with a knowing smile. "It took me a while to get used to the beauty and thrill of the ocean too." I smiled at him. "I'm glad I'm not the only one."
We both watched the waves for a little bit. "So, what's your name?" I asked, "I'm Jonathan, and I've been a part of Jack's crew for going on 3 years now." He leaned against the railing "what about you?" "Well, I'm Roxane, and I haven't been on the Black Pearl for very long, But obviously, you know that," I said, shrugging and criticizing myself in my head.
"How old are you?" I asked, trying to guess in my head. "I'm 30 years old, but I've been told I look much younger." I nodded. "I'm 28, and I've been told the same thing." He laughed, revealing straight pearly white teeth, which was very rare in the world of pirates. "So what caused you to join us on our journey?" He asked. "Well, I've wanted to sail the seas ever since I was a little girl. And being trapped on Tortuga was not the best experience. So I took the first ship available that wasn't full of perverted ruffians," I said, glancing around."Well, there are a few ruffians on this ship, but I'll help protect you" he exaggerated a wink and wiggled his eyebrows.
I laughed. "I appreciate the offer, but I'm pretty sure I can handle myself," I said, flipping my hair and putting my hand on my hip in an equally exaggerated pose. We both laughed at our exaggerated actions. "I think we can be pretty good friends, Roxane, if that's ok with you, of course" he looked at me for affirmation. "I agree, Jonathan. We have the potential to be good friends" I smiled at him and held out my hand for a handshake. He returned the handshake and waved, walking off to tend to his responsibilities.
"Who was that?" Martha asked, coming up the stairs. "That was Jonathan. He's actually pretty nice and not a total flirt." I told her, referring to the other pirates we met while working at the bar. "That's rare nowadays," she said, walking over to rest her head on my shoulder. "It really is," I agreed, resting my head on the top of hers. "Do you think something might come out of it?" She asked with genuine curiosity. "I have no idea, but personally, I don't think so. I'd love to have him as a friend or even a best guy friend. But I don't think I'll be interested in him in any other way," I explained, slightly redirecting the ship. "I understand that," she said give me a little bit of arm room.
"I know you're gonna be slightly annoyed about me asking you this but.... is it because of Stephan? The reason you can only see him as a friend?" I took a deep breath and looked at her before answering. "Honestly, partly yes but also no. I'll always love him, but I don't solely focus on the thought of him anymore. Now he's just a shadow from my past." I took a shaky breath and looked up so my eyes wouldn't start to tear up.
Martha walked up to me and put her arms around me, pulling me into a hug. "I'm sorry, girl, I can't even imagine the pain that you went through and are still going through. But he would want you to move on. Stephan loved you, and honestly, he'd want you to be happy with whoever you decide to love." She pulled back slightly and gave me a small smile. I laughed lightly and wiped away the stray tears that escaped. "I have no idea why I'm so emotional recently," Martha and I laughed."Well, I'll let you get back to steering the ship." She said, starting to walk down the stairs. "Thanks, and I'll see you later" I waved as she waved back.
