Chapter 31: Tragically ever after

Nelly's POV

I had heard about Jo and Alaric's wedding.
I didn't exactly get an invitation, which was not very surprising, but I had always been exceptionally good at showing up uninvited. That was one of my many specialties.

That thought was enough for me to leave Michigan and travel back to the place where I always find myself returning to. Mystic Falls.

I wasn't sure why, but I had a feeling that I needed to be at Jo's wedding. If not for the joy of her getting married then at least for the irony. The irony that she was getting married in the church that I had blissfully ended my uncle's and his family's and the wedding guests lives. Let's just hope history doesn't repeat itself.

Taking a step on the grass I immediately noticed the beautiful decorations of the venue. This was undoubtedly Caroline's work.

Before I knew it, there was a man holding a tray of champagne, offering one to me.
I nodded at him and took the glass with a small smile.
I had a bad feeling about today, and it was one of the reasons for my strangely good mood.

As I looked forward, I saw Jo in her beautiful wedding dress and Caroline walking away from her. They both looked stressed.
I walked over to Jo and greeted her with a smile.

"Wow, Josette Parker is getting married. I gotta say, I'm pleasantly surprised to see you building a life for yourself. Alaric is a lucky man."

Jo looked shocked but her face changed cold right after realizing that I was actually there.

"You're not invited"

"Why?"
I tilted my head with a pout.

"Are you seriously asking me that?"

"Oh come on Josette. I'm here for your big day! The more the merrier as they say."

"Leave"
She said in a cold tone.

"Fine"
I said cheerfully, watching her distressed look as she went back inside.

I made my way around the church and snatched some finger foods that were just waiting for me neatly on the tables.

"What are you doing here?!"
I head Caroline yell behind me. I placed the food back down and put on my best fake smile. Turning around I was met with the furious eyes of Caroline Forbes.

"Caroline. No longer humanity-free I presume."

"Answer my question. We were fine when you were out of town and on your little killing spree. We didn't need you to show up right before Jo's wedding to screw things up."

"I thought about staying away, but I just couldn't miss Jo's wedding. And I do love showing up uninvited."
I whispered to her and patted her shoulder, eating a few more salty snacks from the silver platter.

Caroline was stomping away and I could almost feel her fuming.

"Caroline? Caroline, what's wrong?"
Stefan walked to her as he noticed something was going on with her.

"I am trying to breathe, Stefan."

She took a couple of deep breaths before being able to talk again.

"Nelly is back. And not only is she back, she's here! In Mystic Falls! And she's ruining Jo and Alaric's perfect day!"

"Wait, Nelly's here?"
Stefan furrowed his brows, looking around.

"Yes and she's here to ruin everything! God, why couldn't she just stay in New York or whatever?!"
Caroline was going crazy. She was a control freak, and I had obviously triggered something in her since she was so angry, you could mistake her for having a panic attack.
