Sunshine poured through my dorm room windows, while birds chirped outside. It was a perfect morning, if mornings could be perfect.
"Caralyn, wake up! Breakfast is ready!"I called out to my roommate.
I heard the creak of a bed, and a moment later she emerged from her room. I tossed some eggs and two pancakes on a plate and set it on our tiny
table.
"Sleep well?"I asked.
"Like a baby."Caralyn answered with a laugh.
"Good. And don't take too long getting ready and eating. Finals today."I reminded her, knowing she would forget.
"Thanks Emme! Did you eat?"Caralyn replied.
"Yep! Now I'm going to go for a swim. See you later!"I said, gathering my books and keys.
I ran down the steps of my dorm to the parking lot and unlocked my silver Prius. Within moments the air conditioner was blowing and I was on the road
to my college. It was only a five minute drive and because of the early hour the school's parking lot was mostly empty. I got out and headed for the
pool, changed, and then quickly dove in. I swam for an hour by myself, and then practiced with the diving team for another hour. Afterwards I
showered and headed off to my first class. On my way there the dean stopped me.
"Emmeleia, I would like to speak with you in my office. It will be an excused tardy for you."She said.
"Of course."I answered as I followed her back through the hallways.
The dean was silent on the way there, and only began speaking again when we sat in her office.
"You are a very exceptional young woman Emmeleia."She said. "You are valdictorian yet you are part of the dive team, soccer team, and numerous other
activites. Yet you don't know what you want to do after this year."
"I don't know."I agreed.
"Many professional soccer coaches and swim coaches want you."The dean said.
"I know."I replied.
"Yet that doesn't influence your decision any?"The dean asked.
"I'm not sure."I admitted.
"I must say then, no matter how much I don't want to, that if you don't give me an answer by a week from tomorrow, then I'm going to turn them all
down."The dean said.
"Okay...."I said, stunned she would do so.
"I don't want to, but I think of you like a daughter Emmeleia. I don't want to see that brain of yours be put to waste."The dean said.
"Thank you."I finally said.
"Now go, you have classes you need to be at."The dean instructed.
I nodded and left, heading down the hallway to my first class.
The rest of my day passed quickly, as did the rest of the week. By time time Saturday arrived I was relieved my finals were over, but starting to
panic because I didn't have an answer.
"Emme, I'm going over to Ruby's dorm, wanna come?"Caralyn called out from the entry hall.
"No, I'm sleeping!"I mumbled and rolled over in bed.
"Sleep tight then girly."She replied.
After a second I heard the door slam shut, and in my half- asleep state a dream came.
"Go Emmeleia! Go now!"A woman called.
She was tall and thin with long and curly black hair, much like mine. She was wearing an elegant dark purple gown, with an extravagent silver crown
on her head. Tears fell from her half closed blue eyes.
"Emmeleia, go now! Get out of here and head into the forest.!"The woman commanded.
I turned and ran out a glass door which slammed shut behind me, but then I turned back around and saw seven people all dressed in fancy clothes with
their eyes closed and their mouths moving. I backed up slowly and found a chair which I slumped into, my ruby red gown flaring out away from the
chair like a flame. After several moments of the seven royal like figures doing whatever they were doing a giant glass wall formed between me and the
door. It was there for a second, and then vanished, but the figures turned and began to defend against the intruders. I started to run towards where
the wall was, feeling a need to help the people inside, but as I hit the place where the wall had been, I could feel a power push me away. I felt
anger well up inside me as I tried to pass through, but I couldn't. Finally I gave up and slumped back into the chair. I laid my head on my hands and
sobbed, knowing it would be a massacre in there.
I woke up from the dream and looked around to make sure I was still in my room. I stood up and walked to the mirror. Tear stains lined my face, and
fresh tears still fell.
"It was so real, yet it couldn't have been! Magic isn't real!"I said aloud to myself.
