I woke up just before the sun rose. I waited for my eyes to adjust to the dark room before I got up yawning.
I checked Kakyoin's room to see if he was up. I saw his phone screen softly glowing with a dead battery symbol. I crept in and plugged his phone in. He had a habit of staying up late on his phone and forgetting to plug it in.
I moved to the kitchen stretching my arms. I opened the fridge and saw nothing. I don't know what I was expecting. Closing the fridge I opened the cupboards, there was nothing there either.
"I gotta get used to the fact that I'm not home..." I grumbled, then I remembered something. There were a couple bags of food sitting by the door. Kakyoin was the one who brought them up. We agreed to put ths groceries away later but never got to it. Shutting the cupboard I shuffled over to the door. Like I thought the bags were there, I dug my hand inside one as I crouched down. My hand searched until I felt cool metal. I pulled a can out and cracked it open. It was refreshing, even if it was room temperature.
Getting up from my position I turned around and wandered over to the bathroom. I flicked the lights on, setting the can down on the sink and beginning my morning routine. Brushed my teeth, then my hair. Grabbing a towel from under the sink I threw it on a rack as I pulled the shower's clouded glass door back. I twisted the tap until hot water ran. Stripping down I climbed inside, shutting the door. The hot water felt amazing on my skin. I pulled the long wet hair away from my face to begin washing it. Five pumps of of shampoo rubbed between my hands glided through my hair. Then another five pumps of conditioner. I heard the door creak open. I don't think I closed it but there's wasn't a draft either. I opened the glass door and was relieved, it was Kakyoin. Then I paused and quickly shut the door.
"Uh- Kakyoin there's something called privacy? Could you not wait to take your piss until I was out of the shower??" I got a grumpy reply back.
"It's the toilet or the kitchen sink and I'm pretty sure you don't want the image of me pissing in the sink everytime you walk by it." I heavily exhaled. He acted like this whenever he didn't get enough sleep.
"Okay how late- or should I say how early did you stay up?"
"I don't know, maybe 2:00am?" I rolled my eyes in disappointment as I rinsed my hair out. Turning the water off I wrung my hair out, then opened the glass door partially to grab my towel from off the rack. I wrapped it around my waist before getting out of the shower. I patted the pissing Kakyoin on the back as I left the bathroom, I'd pick up my clothes later.
I entered my room and searched for clothing to wear. I threw on a black hoodie and light gray jeans. I walked back to the bathroom to put my earrings in and to rebrush and style my hair. Kakyoin by then left the bathroom and was getting ready in his own room. Before brushing my hair I searched for my hair gel. It wasn't in sight, I looked through the medicine cabinet and bathroom cabinets.
"Kakyoin did you touch my hair gel?" I beckoned out to him.
"I didn't touch your shit, did you leave it in your room by chance?"
I went back to check but it still wasn't there. I then figured I forgot it at home and let out a loud exaggerated sigh. Dragging myself to the bathroom I put my long hair into a messy bun with one of Kakyoin's elastics I stole. Looking in the mirror I paused, it had been years since I wore my hair in other ways.
Kakyoin popped out of his room and dramatically gasped when he saw me.
"Holy shit, for once you don't have a pillar on your head," he grinned as he raised his eyebrows. "You really couldn't find your hair gel anywhere?"
"I think I left it at home so for the time being I'm gonna wear it like this. Until I can find a place that sells the brand I use at least."
"Have you ever thought of cutting your hair shorter? I bet it would save you money from how much hair product you use."
"Kakyoin if you say some shit like that again I'll shave your eyebrows off so we match." I gave a sarcastic smile before I walked out of the bathroom. I heard a snicker from him with my back turned.
I started packing my school bag as the sun came up. Sliding my laptop, notebook and pens inside with an additional charger. Kakyoin walked to the door with me following behind him. It was still early in the day, it had been around an hour since I got up. The sun was in the sky now as we headed down and towards the college building. I saw familiar faces from yesterday, both from the streets and restaurant. Nudging Kakyoin I pointed towards a man who's hat barely showed his face.
"I think that's the guy you were flirting with yesterday at the waffle house."
"What makes you say that?"
"Well he's really buff and tall but then again a lot of people here so far do too." I squinted my eyes to get a closer look as we approached the building. It was definitely him, I felt a cold aura coming off of him.
"Did he ever text you?" I look back at Kakyoin who's face curled into a sour look.
"It's either he didn't see the napkin in the receipt or he completely ignored me."
"Well instead of diving straight into flirting learn his name first. It might work out better." I heard a sigh from him and I smiled. If there's one thing I knew about him is that he hates being wrong. I nudged him again for reassurance.
We both stumbled inside the building. The ceiling was raised and the walls were intricate. It was regal to say the least. The large halls were flooded with students trying to figure their schedule out. Professors stood in the doorways to their classes welcoming students in. There was a burly man who stood to my right. He had deep royal hair and a kind smile. He wore a lanyard with his ID slipped inside of it around his neck. I couldn't make out his name with the ocean of people in my way. On my left stood an equally burly man with chesnut hair and turquoise eyes. He smiled with playfulness, playing around with his lanyard.
We pushed our way around the hallways until we were face to face with a blonde man. He looked down at us with a sinister glare. Though he was only a couple inches taller than me I felt immediate intimidation. Staring down at his feet we walked into his class. We climbed up the stairs and took a seat in the booths near some windows. Other students soon came in and took their seats, respectfully away from each other. A familiar face walked up the stairs and took a seat right next to me. I looked over and it was him, Avdol. My gaze quickly straightened out as my thoughts from yesterday crashed down onto me. I was sandwiched between my best friend and a man I insulted several times. I could not move over and I wouldn't dare to try. The only way I could communicate was through my phone. I texted Kakyoin a few words, my thumbs shaking from being nervous.
Kakyoin looked over at me then slightly moved away to give decent space between the three of us. He gave me only one glare the entire time. 'Apologize' was in his eyes. I felt my soul crumble as my head slowly creaked to face him.
"Your hair looks better down," I paused. I hadn't even apologized or faced this man and he had complimented me. This was the most backward logic I've seen in a person. "You don't need to apologize either, I know you were acting out of irrational anger. I also know you didn't actually mean anything you said."
I couldn't speak. Any word I wanted to spill out wouldn't come. He flashed a look, simply smiled and snickered at my reaction. His head then turned back to the front where the blonde man slammed the door shut. The sound echoed through the room until it was silent. Now getting a better look I saw how dramatic he was looked. He was dressed in a bright yellow blazer, wore bright lipstick, had a full manicure and carried a lime green Louis Vuitton bag. He boomed with confidence. Gently putting his bag down he spoke. His voice was deep and held a quaint British accent.
"My name is Dio Brando, you will refer to me as Dio. All of you have the honour of being taught in this classroom by me." The attitude he held put a sour taste in my mouth, his confidence was egotistical. I then saw Kakyoin throw his hand up. He didn't wait for a reply from "Dio" he spoke once he stopped.
"Excuse me Mr.Dio, if I may ask why do we call you by your first name instead of your last? Won't that confuse some of the students here?" I saw Dio roll his eyes at Kakyoin. It looked like this teacher took his question as an insult.
"My last name is a burden, my father was a piece of shit who only ever cared about booze. That is why I prefer Dio. Now is there anymore stupid questions?" He gave Kakyoin a twisted grin, bearing his sharp teeth towards him. I saw Kakyoin look away in disgust and shame, threatened. I would've stood up to talk back but my wrist was grabbed by Kakyoin. He shook his head swiftly twisted back around. I had to swallow my anger for the time being.
Dio went over the basics of what we would be learning for the year, I was listening but staring out one of the windows the entire time. I never really realized how slow college would actually be at first. In highschool we were always told that we'll be thrown right in but it's the same thing. I fidgeted with the strap of my bag which was on the floor, I heard my name being called in the distance until it was yelling. Dio slammed his hands down on the desk which cause me to jump and hit both my fists against the mahogany table. I recoiled in pain and mumbled as he called my name out one last time.
"You've been staring out that window for the hour, is the green grass that distracting for your small brain?" He asked while holding his hands together as he fluttered his eyes. I didn't know how to reply. I hadn't been called out before, at least not in this way. My jaw hung loose before I swallowed and spoke, my gut tensing. If he was going to be an asshole I wanted to give an asshole reply back.
"Well maybe if your class wasn't so lukewarm I'd pay more attention, Brando." I sharply tuned in. Some students around us tensed up in fear, others covered their mouths to hide smiles and laughter. Dio only grinned with delight, which is what confused me.
"Aren't you a firecracker! I think I'll enjoy having you in my class," he picked up a textbook from the gigantic pile laying on his desk beside his bag. He opened the front then hastily shut it. "Jean Pierre Polnareff. Here, catch." With wide eyes and a vindictive smile he chucked the textbook at me with inhuman strength. The textbook flew at me so fast I couldn't process what happened. One second it was in someone's hands, the next moment it smacks me square in the face. It caused my head to go flying back to where I smashed the back of my head against the ivory wall. My head fell forward now grasping my bleeding nose, which was hit with the spine, as that sick bastard laughed.
"You'll be charged to buy a new textbook if you get blood on it, be more careful!" It was silent for a few seconds as we shared eye contact before he started to call students up for their textbooks. Terrified they stood up and grabbed their textbooks. While the class was up Kakyoin searched for anything in his bag that would help me. I saw him frown as he threw his bag over his shoulder.
"We should go to the bathroom to clean you up, I couldn't find anything in my bag." He pulled me up by my free hand. I turned around to grab my bag but Avdol handed it to me. His eyes were friendly and calm. I took it from him but felt an overwhelming guilt. I couldn't explain where it came from, as soon as I grabbed the bag from him Kakyoin and I hurried off to the bathroom. I felt a cold gaze from Dio as we left.
I took a seat on the bathroom's counters as Kakyoin cleaned my face up. I protested against it, he wouldn't listen. Ever since we were kids he would clean me up after I got hurt.
"Your forehead's going to bruise. You're lucky it shared the impact with your nose or else it would be broken," He stood over me for a minute, his frown deepened "What's up? You look like a sad puppy."
"That guy Avdol, I was about to apologize to him but it's like he read my mind," I rubbed the bridge of my nose looking to the side to avoid eye contact. "But the entire time I felt guilty about it and I still do."
"A day ago you hated the guy and now your opinions suddenly changed because of one kind interaction? You are a strange guy Polnareff. Now let's get back to class, we still have thirty minutes left." He left the bathroom as I slid off the counter. I returned to class shortly after he did, after looking in the mirror for a minute or two. I sat down and was no longer sandwiched. Taking a deep breath I knew from then on I wouldn't talk back in this class, or at least try not to.
Class ended faster than I thought. On my way to my next class, I was stopped by Avdol in the hallway. He held a piece of paper in front of me. It was his number.
