Lindorm Princess is set in Denmark, and as such, Danish words and creatures are referred to frequently throughout the book. The language of the Fae is based on a combination of Icelandic and Old Norse. Here are a list of terms that you may find helpful.
Mor: Danish for mother
Far: Danish for father
Nisse: A Christmas hobgoblin that resembles what we associate with gnomes. Nisse wear red, pointed hats and are commonly associated with the Winter Solstice. In modern-day Denmark, Nisse bring presents on Christmas, celebrate the Christmas cheer, and enjoy eating rice porridge (risengrød) with a pat of butter on top. In pagan times, it was believed that every Danish farm had a Nisse, that lived in the stable or hayloft. If you treated your Nisse well by giving them risengrød, they would bless your household and do some of your farm chores, like feeding the horses.
Fae: Used to refer to mythological creatures, that are capable of magic
Spirits: Used to refer to powerful creatures that used to be human- in some cases corrupted
Nøkk: A type of spirit akin to a male-version of a siren. Nøkk haunt waterfalls, brooks, lakes and other water sources, and lure women and children to drown, by playing their magical violin.
Lindorm: A type of dragon-like creature that resembles a large serpent. In some illustrations, a Lindorm has two arms. It was said that they liked to eat cattle.
Slange: Snake
Landvættir: Literal translation: land wights. The Landvættir are attatched to specific elements in nature. They can be connected to anything from a stone to a tree, to a field. It was believed that if you appeased them with regular offerings, they would bless you. They are guardians that protect nature, and allow it to fluorish.
Troll: A type of fae that is extremely dangerous to humans. They are large, ugly, and dull-witted creatures. They dwell in isolated part of the forest, usually in rocks or caves, and turn to stone in sunlight. They enjoy eating humans, if any are foolish enough to stumble into their territory.
Jotunn: Giants that live in the hills. They also like to torment humans, before eventually eating them, and enjoy the chaos of nature. Being bullies, they enjoy destroying the homes of Landvættir on occasion, if not stopped.
Kulning: A herding call done usually by women in Scandinavia, to herd cattle. Similar to yodeling.
