From the car's backseat window, it looked like someone had colored the sky with a black Sharpie. Keilani couldn't see any stars. As her family's SUV pulled away from the driveway, Keilani knew that when she returned, things would be different. She would be different. Her house in Round Rock would always be her home, but it would never again be where she lived; at least not for 9 out of 12 months of the next 4 years.
Keilani looked up at the sky's natural night light. The pearl white moon was the sky's only light source at 4AM and the lack of sunlight prevented most of her nostalgia. It's hard to reminisce when you're not able to see anything out the window. Keilani wanted to take a quick nap on the way to the airport, but she felt like she owed it to herself to stay awake. This was an important moment. These were her last minutes as a resident of Round Rock, Texas and she wanted this moment in her memory. Only three of the four people in the car had a return ticket back to Austin from Chicago's O-hare Airport. She was not one of the three.
