As Dr. Hibble descended through the lithosphere the next day, he again pressed the blue button to give his report.

"Dr. Hibble, reporting underground for the second time. I am now in the lithosphere, the second layer down. I am now about 80 kilometres down through the total of about 100 kilometres that encompasses this layer. The area I am going through is continental, so it is mostly made up of igneous rock. If I was traveling through oceanic areas, I would be seeing mostly magnesium and iron. The deepest part of the lithosphere reaches up to temperatures of about 932 degrees Fahrenheit, and pressures of up to 200,000 pounds per square inch. The lithosphere is solid. Thank you for listening. Goodbye for now."

He sat back and closed his eyes. It would be a few hours yet before he reached the asthenosphere.
