Dr. Hibble was asleep when he finally reached the asthenosphere, and it was several more hours until he woke up and realized what had happened. He started, and hastily pushed his finger into the blue button to give the report.

"Hello, this is Dr. Hibble, here with report number three. I am in the asthenosphere, about 140 kilometres through of the total 180. This layer is made up of mostly iron and magnesium silicates, and at it's deepest point, the temperature is about 500 degrees Celsius, and the pressure is 14,500 psi. The melting point of this layer is about 1,360 degrees Celsius. The density of this layer is about 3.3 g/cc. The asthenosphere is liquid. Thank you."

Dr. Hibble removed his had from the button and sat back. Half of the layers down. Half of the layers that had lain between him and incineration. At least it would take a while to get through the mantle...
