"So, is this wolf-lyme disease contagious?" asked the taxi driver.
Carl lifted his head from the scribbling on his notepad and glanced at the crooked road over the driver's shoulder. The jutted wooden hood of the minivan taxi was swerving along its shape.
"Not necessarily. But the diseased wolves must be kept away from the healthy ones," he made up a quick reply as his fingers moved to scratch the corner of the seat. No dust—busy taxi.
He had asked the driver about the deaths and found that he too was unaware of it. Carl suspected that the military officials had kept the news from the common folk. He was glad that Bigge was too ignorant to overlook the matter earlier. The military was certainly maintaining some kind of secrecy for a reason. Once he had made his assumptions, Carl went back to read his notepad. He was brushing up through the particulars on the fingerprint lifting process.
Fingerprint
glue superglue fuming for nonporous surface—iodine fuming, silver nitrate, or ninhydrin—one of the chemicals comes into contact with the fingerprint residue (natural oils/fats)—print becomes visual.
latent prints—Porous surface: glass, marble, metal, plastic, and finished wood—powder technique
Locating and identifying prints left on human skin is incredibly difficult. Two hours—maximum—for the print on skin—viable.
flat or rough surface—difficult
"Three wolves in three weeks... huh, that must be upsetting for Lord Besset as well. He is a big wolf lover," the driver remarked.
"Indeed. That is why he has called me over from the capital... for advanced medication." Carl took out the pocket map and tried to locate the road. "How far still?"
"Uh, just three miles, Sir."
After tracing the road and the military headquarter of Neve in the map, he returned to his notepad.
Lifting on flat/round surface—given rubber tape has adhesive surface—to be applied to the fingerprint. (flat object can be swiped across the top of the tape to ensure no bubbles or ripple)
Peel off the tape—place plastic cover on the adhesive side—Identification info... is to be written on the back of the tape/a card.
It was snowing by the time Carl alighted at the military headquarters of Neve. While receiving the fare, the driver put forth a glum face at him. "My dog rarely barks. Do you think he has got a throat problem?"
Carl was irritated by the endless questions. "Is it a recent development?" he asked the driver.
"No, I sometimes feel he is too lazy to open his mouth."
"Try chewing a meat loaf in front of him. It should work just fine."
At the entrance gate, Carl produced his ID and the Governor's appointment letter for the guards. After careful examination of his credentials, one of the guards escorted him to the main office.
