My eyes kept on Nicki's fleeting figure as she rushed to faithfully return to Dominic's side. I expected her to get surprised but I didn't think it'd spook her this much. Either way, this should turn out to be interesting.
"Ah man, that was fun," Jake chuckled from the corner of my vision. He too had been watching Nicki hectically flock after Dominic and turned away with a scruff of his hair when she had disappeared into the confines of the crowd. His eyes slitted over to me with a twinkle of amusement, unaffected by the entire scene. "Don't you think so too, Kat?" He tittered, almost mocking the emotional turmoil Nicki and Dominic must've been feeling right now. I narrowed my eyes under his gaze, unconvinced. He really doesn't break that front of his, does he? Surely there's more to his character than that.
To answer his question, I found it more intriguing than fun. As emotionally detached as I seemed to be with sympathy towards others, I wasn't a sicko that rejoiced in their misfortunes. I exhaled and crossed my arms together, slipping my stare back to where Dominic and his friends had been standing before. Oscar and Jayden had both disappeared as well, most likely in pursuit of Nicki and Dominic. "Well, it's certainly not what I expected. I hope everything's okay though," I murmured, feigning some concern in my tone. Although I was lying, I didn't want things to get too out of hand. After all, something seemed up with Dominic before. And, I wouldn't want something happening to Nicki, who's one of the only people I give a shit about.
I heard Jake chuff out a breathy chuckle through his nose before tilting his head away. I flickered my gaze back to him upon it. He brought up one of his legs and perched it on top of the other to better slouch into the seat. I caught his stare growing half-lidded and calculating when it traced over me again like a sixth-grade maths problem. What the hell's with that look? "Oh come on now, Kat. I know you don't really give two shits about them finding any peace," he cooed, with a cynical sneer. I stiffened under the invasive glee Jake held in his eyes. It was like he was putting me together like a simple, six-piece puzzle. My expression wavered in its neutral handle of the situation, pinching up with slight caution.
"W...What do you mean by that?" I asked, retaining a calm tone. Usually, regular people couldn't pick up on slight changes in behaviour, body language and voice when they were putting someone in the spotlight like this. So, it wasn't that hard to lie.
Jake's lips curled up puckishly, an insidious shadow casting over his features as he drilled into me. I withheld the urge to swallow. The urge to furrow my eyebrows together in wary. Normal people shouldn't be able to tell but there was something about this boy that unsettled me. Like all my tricks and lies were redundant in his presence.
How the hell did he manage to have such an intimidating aura? One that made me want to confess every wrong-doing I've ever committed. It was like he had been trained for this sort of stuff.
