I rush to the door as I quickly pull on some shoes, and grab my purse. I scramble to get outside with a toaster strudel in one hand, closing the door behind me with the other. It's mid afternoon and the sun is slowly setting, but still bright.
"Thanks for picking me up," I tell my bestfriend, Cassidy. She looks at me, smiling and chewing her gum.
"No problem," she says, "are you excited to be getting your truck back after Jack crashed it?"
I nod, "Yes! I've been waiting for almost three weeks, I knew I shouldn't have let Jack drive it. Oh, the things I do for that boy." I sighed.
She looks over at me with a sarcastic look on her face, "Yeah, it's Jack. Your ex, or boyfriend, whatever he is now, the really hot but stupid one."
I roll my eyes at her remark, which was very true but still dumb of her to say, "I'll have to tell him to drive your car just for saying that then," I laugh, and she does the same.
"But seriously, you shouldn't be trusting Jack with nice things. Like c'mon, it's common sense!"
"I know, I know," I say, "he just really needed it at the moment... I also happen to still love him, so I couldn't say no," I turn my head away, not wanting to see her annoyed face.
"For what?" She looks over at me while waiting at a light, waiting to hear something obnoxious. For a moment I take a look out the window, noticing the plain fields that stretch out for miles. I turn my head forward a bit, noticing somebody walking down the border of the fields. They're there every time I drive down this road. I finally break from my thoughts to answer Cassidy's question.
"He had to go visit a relative in the hospital, and he didn't want me being there with him all night so he just asked to borrow it. By the way, the lights green."
"Mhm, sure," She says quickly turning her attention to the road.
It's about fifteen minutes later, and we're at the shop waiting to get my truck. We have the radio on, and the windows down, taking in the warm air. I sigh, running my hands through my hair as I sit quietly, waiting for the workers to bring out my truck. My phone vibrates in my purse, but I leave it there, not really wanting to talk to anybody. I'm pretty exhausted from working out earlier and I just want to go home and relax. It vibrates again.
"Em, look, they're bringing it out!" Cassidy excitedly says, her blond hair swaying as she turns her attention to it.
"Finally," I say, "I'm ready to go home and sleep."
"Wow, what a life you have. Just drive to my house, we can invite some people over," she says, I nod giving her the okay as I have nothing better to do, and open the car door, "See ya Em!"
As I walk across the parking lot, I sigh out of relief that I can finally get some fresh air. I turn back and wave at Cassidy before opening my door, and settling into my seat. I lay my head back on the cold leather, searching for my phone in my purse. I got a few texts, one from Jack and another from my mom.
M- Your father and I will be out today, don't have too much fun. Xoxo, mom
J- I heard you got your truck back. Sorry babe
J- Call me laterJack and I were together for almost three years, since we were fifteen. About three months ago, we broke up because he cheated on me. Yes, I was heartbroken, but he's all I've ever known being my first boyfriend. We decided not to stop talking anyways, and we still act as if we're a couple. I know, it's complicated.
To Jack- I'm going to Cassidy's right now, I'll pick you up on my way.
I sit there waiting for Jack to text me back, and decide to call Cassidy. The phone rings a few times, and she answers.
"Hey, what's up?" She says.
"I'm picking up Jack, he's coming too."
"Okay," she says, and hangs up quickly. I set my phone down, start the truck, and slowly back out of the parking lot.
...
I honk the horn once, and patiently wait for Jack to come out. Jack and I hang out quite a bit. But we don't hang out nearly as much as me and Cassidy do. She's almost like my sister, since I have known her basically coming out of the womb. Our parents are really close, also.
I notice Jack walking out the door, looking pretty casual in some grey sweatpants, and his old schools hockey sweatshirt, and some beat up sneakers. Typical guy apparel.
"Hey," he says quickly getting into my truck, "thanks for picking me up."
"No problem," I say, and he gives me a little kiss on the cheek. I smile happily at his gesture, and head off to Cassidy's.
"I missed you," Jack says quietly.
"Aw how sweet," I smile sarcastically, trying to convince him that I missed him while he was out of town ruining my truck, this is the first time seeing him since I got the truck back and fixed. I don't really miss him being around me almost all of the time, he gets on my nerves a lot. My phone vibrates a few times, but I'm not going to check it. I keep my focus on the road, and continue driving. Some certain roads stretch out for miles, nothing but fields in sight. It's quite nice actually, not much traffic to worry about. I reach down to turn the radio on, twisting the volume control a little bit, filling the car with music. Comfortable silence fills the car, only the sound of Jack's humming and the music is heard.
...
"Go knock on the door, I need to check my phone," I tell Jack. He slightly nods and gets out of the car slowly, and I grab my purse. I hold my phone in my hand reading that I have two missed calls, both from my friend Kade. I decide to call him back. No answer.
"Hm," I mutter to myself, "whatever."
I step out of my truck, taking my phone with me incase I get a call back. Jack smiles as he sees me approach, and we both walk in the door hand in hand. I see several people, all of them we know, and make my way to an empty spot on Cassidy's couch. She arrives quickly from her kitchen, bringing out multiple variations of alcoholic beverages and shot glasses.
"Who's ready to party?" Cassidy asks, waving the drinks around excitedly. I sigh, "great."
Jack leans next to me, his breath lightly tickling my ear, "This should be fun," he smirks, chuckling. I lean back, putting my face in my hands and groan. The night is just starting.
