Chapter 5
“Charge to 300!”
“Charging to 300.”
“Clear!” It still showed a flat line. “Come on, c’mon!”
Finally, the cardiac monitoring rate started to come alive again with the beeping of a normal heart rate.
“Oh, thank God! Start him on antibiotics and monitor his vitals every 30 minutes for any changes.” I instructed to a nurse.
“Okay, Dr. Simons.”
I pumped some hand sanitizer on my way out of the ER and proceeded to the nurses’ station to sign the chart. After that I went to the doctor’s lounge to sneak some coffee in my body. I poured coffee on a cup that has the logo of the hospital. I feel like all the caffeine I had this morning is starting to wear off. Now all I feel is how exhausted I am, it’s not even lunch yet.
After that emergency, I think all the strength I had left is beginning to drain.
I finished my cup and went back to check on my patient. I knocked at room 204 before proceeding inside until someone said, “Come in.”
Dr. Greg was cleaned up now. I almost forgot how handsome he is. Now, I remember having a crush on him when I was still in the admin department. He has deep green eyes that look so calm, even though he was just out of the ER. It looks like gold when it hits the light though, but that doesn’t make him any less handsome.
“Hi. How are you feeling?” I smiled, not knowing what else to do. Considering I knew him beforehand, it’s a little different compared to when I am with other patients.
“Great. At least now I know my sister’s out of the surgery.”
“Yeah, she’s in the recovery room right now. She’s a fighter.”
“She is.” He smiled now. It seemed like a half smile though, but it was a smile.
He looks so handsome, even with a half-smile-almost-serious-face. That jaw line is just so masculine and sexy.
“Dr. Simons?”
“Oh right.” I snapped back to reality. “So, uhm, so far your vitals are good. But we need to monitor you for a couple of days, just in case.” He was staring at me, which I found weird at first, then I remembered he was a doctor, too – a cardiologist in fact. How stupid, Becks.
“Right. And all of that you already know.”
“That’s okay Dr. Simons. It’s nice to be a patient sometimes, I guess. I mean not that I like being hospitalized, that’s not what I mean at all.” He smiled, again. He seems to realize he was talking too fast. “I’m just glad that you’re not giving me any special treatments.”
“Of course.” I smiled too since I reckon that maybe it is the right thing to do.
“You have a really nice smile, Dr. Simons. You should do it more often. It makes being a patient…uh…how do I put this? Hmm, less stressful.” He smiled again, but now it was more of like a grin. Like he’s teasing me or something.
What? Is he flirting with me? Get over yourself, Becks. He’s being nice.
“Oh, and may I add that I’m so glad you’ve pursued your career as a doctor.”
“Uhh… Excuse me?”
“Well, you’ve worked at the admin before, right? I’m pretty sure you told me once you want to be a doctor.”
“Wow. That’s right. I can’t believe you remembered.”
“Well, I can’t just forget a pretty face like that, yeah?”
I feel like my cheeks were flushed with something warm. Damn it, I’m blushing in front of him. I can’t blush in front of him. Compose yourself, Becks.
“Well. Uhm. Thanks, I guess?”
“You look even prettier when your blushing, you know that Dr. Simons?”
“Right. Stop making me blush now or my cheeks are going to burn.”
“Haha,” he laughed. Even his laugh seems so appealing, why is that? “Maybe I’ll do that.”
“I’ll check on you later, Dr. Greg.”
“Please, call me Greg.”
I smiled. “See you later, Dr. Greg.”
I can’t dismiss calling him Dr. Greg just because he’s a patient now. Besides, it’s the appropriate thing to do since he is somehow also my senior and all that.
I went back to the doctor’s lounge and flopped to the couch and tried to rest when someone or something is shaking me. Is that an earthquake? Someone was moving me.
“Becks…”
I opened my eyes only to close it again because of the blinding light that was killing my eyes.
Only then did I realize that I must have fallen asleep on the couch. And I was drooling. Ew. And Josh was waking me up. Major ew. I bolted to sit up straight while wiping my mouth with my uniform’s cuff sleeve.
“Hey, what’s up. That was embarrassing.”
“Hey.” He smiled at me. He smiled. At me. I think I’m beginning to melt now. How awkward could this be? His smile is just so perfect with his straight teeth. From where I’m looking he looks like someone from a toothpaste commercial.
“Hey…?” It sounded like a question. Why isn’t he talking like our normal talks? There was more of a little bit of awkward silence which lasted for hours, it seems like hours though. I was staring at my shoes now, and I can feel him staring at me.
He sighed loudly, like he was trying to get something off his chest. “Are you… Are you okay?”
“Hmm?” I realized I zoned out a little bit, thinking about…I forgot what I was thinking about. “Why won’t I be?”
“Well, didn’t you get some sleep last night? You look so tired.” I was tempted to ask him the same thing considering what happened last night.
“Oh, yeah. Of course. I slept like a baby last night.” I flashed in a grin at him, although we both know it looks fake.
“Well, I thought that you…uhm…” Wait, is he going to talk about that ‘thing’ I refuse to talk about? No. No. No. NO. “Well, you know. I just thought because you slept here and all, and it’s not even the end of the day yet.” Oh my. He’s flustered. He’s nervous about what he’s saying? “It’s just unusual, that’s all.”
Some bell save me now, please? I don’t what to say!
Beep beep beep beep.
Oh thank God!
“It’s about my patient.” He said while I was standing up abruptly. I almost hit my knee at the table.
“Oh okay,” I said trying to sound casual.
“So, dinner tonight?”
“Yeah sure.”
