I thought of the idea of this book from listening to the music of Tyson Motsenbocker. In 2013, he walked across the west coast of the United States from San Diego to San Francisco. The death of his mother is what inspired him to go on this journey, where he would rediscover himself, a relationship with God, and find inner peace.
In high school, I read a book called Into The Wild, which was the story of Chris McCandless, who left his suburban life to travel across the US and eventually ended up in the wilderness of Alaska, where he would die. I was always very intrigued by this story.
As a teenager and even now in college sometimes, I always wanted to "run away." I wanted to take my old, shitty car, maybe a ukulele or guitar, and just drive west (for reference I am from Wisconsin). I wanted to see nature in its purest form, sleep under the stars, and maybe meet some small town people along the way. Like, 100 or less people kind of small town. I was depressed and anxious. I was always stressed about something, especially in college, there was no time to relax. If I relaxed, I was missing something. I always found the nature spots of where I lived. In my hometown, I would sit on a public dock on the lake and just think about life. In my college town, there was a small man made lake downtown, and I would do the same thing. Even when I took a trip to New York City, the largest city in America, I insisted on going to Central Park. Even there, we found the quiet, peaceful parts.
One of the biggest inspirations were the music of some other artists: Little Chief and Red Molly. Red Molly's cover of 1952 Vincent Black Lightning sparked the fire in me to really dive deep into writing this story. The influence of this song will make more sense later in the story. Their voices are beautiful together and their version of this song is something else. It's a hard thing to describe, if you go listen to it you'll hopefully understand.
Some of the characters are loosely based off of the Canadian TV show Heartland. This show helped give me some ideas of what direction to take this book, and mostly gave me inspiration for characters. I highly recommend watching this show, I believe it's on Netflix?
Anyways, I hope you all enjoy this story. It's a story I'm passionate about, and one I am quite possibly the most proud of. I started writing stories when I was about 14, and obviously my writing style has changed a lot since then. Its not perfect now, but its come a really long way and it makes me feel really good.
It would mean a lot to me if you voted for this story, considered giving me a follow, and left a comment! I would love some feedback, this is one of my first major serious works and I want to know what you all think! What am I doing well, what could be better? Don't totally tear me apart, but I'd love to hear some constructive criticism!
My goal is to update this story every week, and eventually I'll pick a specific day of the week to update on, once finals are over and my work schedule hopefully becomes more consistent. It'll most likely be on weekends.
I hope you all enjoy this story!
