Phone Call
Readers Point of View
A loud ringing echoing throughout my room kept going off. My head felt groggy as I tried turning over to ignore the sound but nothing seemed to work. The echoing sound kept going until I finally gave up and sat up with a groan.
"Why the hell is my alarm going off this early?"
I asked myself reaching over for my phone to see the reasoning for this alarm was because it had been an old work alarm I forgot to turn off.
I sighed loudly and fell back into bed trying to go back to sleep.
My bad luck once again came to light as my body was wide awake not letting me sleep another wink.Refusing to fully wake up for the day I decided to mindlessly scroll through my social media.
Logging into my old accounts a wave of nostalgia washed over me as I saw many old people from high-school in my feeds.
My friends back then we're pretty well known, they always took hours to take a singular picture so they'd look cute for all their followers. Back then I cared a bit more than I do now when it came to taking pictures. A good example of this was an old friend of mine named Lorelei. We met in our freshman year through a group project and from then we hung over fairly often.
Eventually she started dating her current boyfriend Steve and we began seeing each other less and less. His friend group wasn't really the type of people I got along with so we slowly stopped staying in touch.
Still it's nice seeing she's at least happy with her boyfriend and is seemingly in a healthy relationship still. Regardless if I agree or not with who she's dating as long as they're good for each other that's all that matters. As I was looking through my old high school memories on my social media my phone began to ring. An Unknown Caller screen suddenly appeared. I waited a few seconds to see if it was the wrong number but eventually picked up the phone in case it was something important.
"Hello?" I asked bringing the phone up to my ear.
"..."
No one had answered but I knew someone was on the line as I could hear people talking in the background and audible breathing coming through the phone.
"Hello?" I asked a second time and yet again I got silence.
"If you're not gonna say anything I'm just gonna hang up and block this number." I say as I slowly pulled the phone away from my ear before I heard a quiet woman's voice speak up.
"Uh...hey."
The voice on the other end seems oddly familiar?
"Hello...again. May I ask who's speaking?" I questioned as the voice on the other end let out a shaky sigh.
"Y/n...I know we haven't talked for a couple years, but have you really forgotten me?" The woman's voice asked.
Once she said that I realized who was on the other end of this phone call.
Someone I've distanced myself from years ago and switched my number multiple times to get away from.
"..."
"Y/n- listen I know it's been awhile. I wish I could've called sooner but-"
"Why did you call me in the first place?" I questioned coldly.
"I know you probably don't want to speak with me-" her voice had gotten more raspy than it was the last time I saw her.
"Cut it out mom. What do you want? I told you last time I saw you I wanted nothing to do with you anymore." I said harshly as I bite my lip.
"I don't want much from you- I-I just want to see you. I want to talk to you. It's hard not speaking to my own daughter for years." She stammered.
"It wasn't hard for you when I was a child. So why is it hard now?" I asked.
"I realized I messed up in the past. I want to make things better between us. Please I just want to see you. I heard from your grandmother that you live downtown in an apartment." She told me.
"She shouldn't have told you."
"Please. I just want to see you. I live nearby. Tonight I'm going to the Central Park. If you can find it in your heart to see me at least once then please come meet me. I really need you." My mom requested as she quickly hung up not letting me get another word in.
"..."I felt a weight fall onto my shoulders as she left the decision up to me. I haven't seen her in years. She's been such a touchy subject for awhile now. When I was a child my father had been the one to kick her out after her poor choices but now that I live on my own it's my choice whether I go see her or not.
Since I don't really work anymore I have the time, but is it even a good idea to go?
My dad never told me why he kicked her out because he didn't want to ruin my perception of her but from the stories I've heard about her, she's not the nicest.
With myself being lost in thought a simple knock at my door startled me. I shook the thoughts out of my head and went to open the door.
Standing there was one of the better guests who have become rent free roommates.
"Morning Rhys. What're you doing up so early?" I asked rubbing the back of my head feeling a bit awkward since I'm not exactly in the right headspace to put up with the Daemos.
At the very least he's one of the calmer and more manageable ones.
"Yes uh...good morning?" He said however it sounded more like a question.
"I was wondering if we could speak with each other?"
"Really?" I asked.
"If you'd allow me to come in to speak to you that is." He spoke in such a calm, trusting manner.
"Yeah, you can come in." I said opening my door a little more then closing it. "As long as you promise not to kill me." I joked.
"Are you all still wary of our presence here?" He asked in a panic.
"Oh no, no. Sorry that was a human custom we call a joke. It's a simple thing said by one to make the another laugh." I explained vaguely, watching him nod his head intensely.
"Fascinating, I'll have to write that down later." He commented.
"Anyways why did you want to talk with me here? This isn't our typical place to speak." I asked curiously.
"Yes well, I just wanted to speak with you to check on you." He stated making me a little shocked. The Daemos are checking on me?
"I know myself and the others aren't exactly keen on human manners. After the misunderstanding yesterday you seemed unwilling to let your guard down around us." He briefly explained.
"Oh did I?" I questioned feeling a bit awkward.
He's not wrong. Ever since these guys have moved here I've been much less trusting of them than Ava has. Their little moments when I hear them whispering to one another, when they cut each other off and stop one from saying something, and all their violent actions. It causes me to trust them less and less. However, my lack of trust is something I don't want anyone one of these guys to realize.
"You were acting odd around us Daemos. I wanted to know if we did something to frighten you in anyway?" He asked.
"It's just a bigger adjustment than I originally thought." I vaguely explained. "The constant threats isn't something that's normal here. I'm slowly getting used to it." I added.
"Well, on behalf of us all I want to apologize. None of us are skilled in human manners yet. We are grateful to both you and Ava for teaching us so much up until now and hope you guys will continue to teach us human ways. I hope you both start to feel a little more relaxed around us. Our words aren't always the best and sometimes our mannerisms are questionable for other humans but we are learning. We may seem scary but rest assured, you both will not be harmed with the five of us here." Rhys explained in such a Prince Charming like manner.
"W-Well thank you." I stammered. "It's very kind of you to come to me and assure me that you guys will not harm us." I say with a smile. This doesn't mean I entirely trust these guys or will ever let my guard down around as of the current situation. It is nice that he didn't yell at me though like I know some of these guys would."Well if that's all you had wanted to say then did you want something to eat?" I asked Rhys.
"Something to eat?" He questioned.
"Yeah I can cook you something. I was thinking of making eggs, would you want some?"
"I don't know...are they tasty?" He asked me.
I laughed at his little knowledge on our food customs and brought him into the kitchen.
"For eggs you have to cook them, otherwise you'd get really sick. Eggs are thankfully easy to cook." I explained taking out a pan, turning the heat on, put some light oil in the pan, and waited until it heated up so I could crack my egg into it with Rhys watching in fascination.
"So you humans call this..."
"Cooking!" I finished his sentence as I cracked my egg into the heated pan.
"Cooking is something we do to make our food able to eat, and to make it taste good! Some foods are a lot easier than others, but normally people follow something called a recipe for a harder meal, such as pancakes, salads, or spaghetti." I explained.
"So do you eat these all at once?" Rhys questioned more.
"No, normally us humans eat three meals a day. Eggs and pancakes are things we eat for breakfast, salads could be eaten at lunch, and spaghetti is typically eaten later in the day, for dinner!" I explained taking my scrambled eggs off the pan and putting them on to a plate with a little seasoning.
"Tada!!" I showed him my scrambled eggs.
"What's that stuff on-top?" He asked another cooking question.
"This stuff is seasoning, for eggs normally people just put these things called salt and pepper, but there's a lot of different kinds of seasoning. They're normally used for lunch and dinner meals. It's to make the food taste yummy!" I explained.
He got up close to me, inspecting my plate.
"This is truly incredible." He stated then turned his head towards me.
He didn't realize how close he was to me. His cool blue eyes, dark hair that fell to the sides, and his deep voice that seemed echoed through the quiet apartment.
"You are truly amazing." He said so close to me it felt hard to breathe. My face slowly felt as if it was getting hotter as my eyes continued to focus on the small details of his face.He soon backed away a bit as he looked me in the eyes.
"Y/n?" He asked.
"Y-Yes?" I asked.
"I just want to ensure there is nothing else you are concerned of about us." He brought us back to the trust topic we were on before.
"Yes I'm sure. What makes you ask that again?"
"You keep staring at me, and your overall presence seemed to switch once I got a closer look at the food you had cooked..." he trailed off as I felt a strong wave of embarrassment wash over me. "...your breathing changed slightly, your face seemed to get hotter than it had been before, and your eyes were fixated on me. Did I do something to frighten you?"
"Uh- no!! No you didn't do anything. Sorry, I'm just uh tired." I explained quickly and ate my egg as quick as I could.
"I-I gotta get ready to go out later so- uh...if you need anything just knock on my door." I stammered quickly going back into my room and falling onto my bed.
These guys are definitely dangerous. More dangerous than I originally thought.
In more ways than one.
I let out an annoyed groan and hit my head on my pillow groaning in annoyance thinking over the chaos that my day has already been.Word count: 2116
