You glanced over at Jungkook, huffing as he downed another glass of wine. It had been an hour into dinner and not once, not once had Jungkook even tried to make conversation with you. You watched as Namjoon and Sae laughed and talked and a pang of anger struck your heart. Here you were, suffering through this blind date, and not once could you say that you even remotely enjoyed it. Enough was enough.
"Listen here Junglebook."
Jungkook looked up, eyes narrowing at the nickname. "Jungkook."
"Junglebook. Jungkook. Same thing. Look. We are here on this blind date together and I get it. You're not interested. Whatever. But the least you can do, asshole, is make polite conversation."
Jungkook picked up the bottle of wine, filling his glass to the brim, before leaning forward. "Do you always walk around with a stick in your ass?"
You blanched. "Do I- what?"
Jungkook rolled his eyes, leaning back comfortably into his chair. "Are you always so uptight? Becaus3 I'm letting you know, it's a bad quality for a woman to have."
You grit your teeth, trying your best to stop the string of profanities brewing in your hard from leaving your mouth. "And are you always such a class A douche bag? It's a bad quality for a fuck boy like you to have. Makes it hard to get the girls."
"Fuck boy? Really." He chuckled. "Is that the best you can come up with?"
You scoffed. "Hardly. But I doubt you could even begin to comprehend the meaning of what I would have to say to you."
Jungkook leaned back in his chair, studying you as your nose scrunched up with annoyance and you went back to picking at your food. It was interesting, hearing you mirror his jabs. Most girls just swooned over him and took his insults as jokes. But you? Talking to you was almost refreshing, and for a second, Jungkook almost felt the need to make it up to you. Well. Almost.
He smirked. Annoying was definitely much more entertaining.
"Look. If I'm really annoying you that much," Jungkook mused. "Why don't you just get up and leave? Save yourself from the night of pain and agony I'd give you?"
You hesitated. He was right. You could leave. It would give Jungkook satisfaction, knowing he'd driven you away from what was supposed to be a fun night. But you were also a good friend. You knew that Sae would appreciate you being there and being a comforting presence in the midst of all the excitement.
You leaned forward, faking a look of contemplation. "I could Junglebook. But I'll be a good sport and wait it out. Besides, you need someone who'll make sure you don't get trashed over expensive wine."
Jungkook's eye widened in shock like someone had just slapped him in the face. "I don't- what are you talking about?"
You rolled your eyes. "Of course, you're going to play innocent, but come on Jungkook. Everyone knows."
He clenched his jaw, gritting his teeth together. There was no way everyone knew. There couldn't be."Jungkook, playing the innocence card is not going to work on me." You scoffed. "Everyone knows how you go completely mad when you go on a drinking spree. Last time you nearly beat some random guy unconscious. It was practically campus news."
"I have no idea what lies you're talking about. Besides. Since when was gossip a reliable source of information? Because if that's the case, I've heard some pretty interesting things about you sweetheart." Jungkook taunted as he pushed out of his chair. "Now if you'll excuse me for a moment. I've got better things to do than spend my time here with you."
----
Sae laughed as Namjoon fumbled with his napkin, dropping it for the fifth time in the last hour. "Joon, come on. Leave the poor napkin alone."
"Come on Sae, don't you be messing around with me too," Namjoon mumbled as he tucked the cream cloth back into his collar. "Jungkook was giving me crap the whole way to your house."
"What can I say Namjoon? Jungkook and I, we think alike." Sae said, winking at Namjoon. "You know actually, speaking of. How's Jungkook been after.."
Namjoon sighed, dropping his hands onto the table. "He's become a recluse Sae. And when he isn't at home, locked up in his room doing god knows what, he's out drinking and smoking like it's his last."
Sae reached across the table, lacing her fingers with Namjoon's. "It's ok Namjoon. He'll get better eventually, you know. Drop these crazy habits. Therapy should be helping, right?"
Namjoon grimaced, thinking about the last therapy session he drove Jungkook to. "Sae, he- he quit therapy too. He just gave up, said he wasn't getting any help. I tried convincing him. But.." he sighed again. "Look at us Sae, worrying about Jungkook on our first date like we're some old couple."
Sae grinned. "To be fair Namjoon, Jungkook's like my little brother. And let's be honest, this isn't our first date. First official date, maybe. But you took me out so many times before you asked me on this official date. Took you long enough, too."
Namjoon chuckled, throwing his head back. It was funny, how comfortable and at home he felt around Sae. It felt nice, not having to worry constantly about Jungkook. His eyes wandered to Sae's face, and he felt his heart flutter and she rambled on. Yeah. He felt calm for once.
But his eyes wandered back up, growing wide as he saw Jungkook storming out. He looked back at Byoel, watching her face widen in shock as she watched Jungkook walk away.
Maybe.
Maybe he spoke too soon.
"Sae." Namjoon mumbled, pushing out his chair. "I gotta go. Jungkook, he's-"
"It's fine." Sae said, a small smile gracing her face. She grabbed Namjoon's hand, pulling him close to her and placing a small kiss on his lips. "You do what you have to. We don't want a repeat of last time." she whispered, before gently pushing Namjoon away.
