Over the next few months, I really did try to get a job so I could support myself. But, I really just couldn't stay as a waitress, a receptionist, or even a cook. I even tried to apply for the assistant for the CEO of another law firm, one that Daniel does not work at, but I most likely wouldn't get the job since there was a long waiting list.

Meanwhile, Gabrielle helped me through all the problems that a pregnant woman faces, and we even started discussing baby names. Nova, Selena, Leila, or Alicia if it was a girl, and Jacob, Brian, Ellis, or Kian if it was a boy.

As the day of my interview finally came, I was all set. This was one of my best chances to finally get a job.

As I entered the building, I was awestruck of the huge interior and the organized, clean space. I approached the front desk and asked the receptionist on duty.

"Good afternoon, ma'am. Dan you please tell me where I can get my interview for the assistant position?"

"Ah, yes. You're the last one of the day. 7th floor, 2nd door to the right. Boss is just finishing up his current interview. Good luck!" The lady replied.

I wandered around to look for an elevator and finally gave up as I found a set of stairs instead.

As I huffily climbed up the last stair and approached the 2nd door on the right, my heart pounded. I waited outside for a few seconds, and then a woman about my age that looked suspiciously familiar opened the door and stalked away with anger.

What was that all about, I wondered.

Just then, a young man no more than a few years older than me opened the door. I caught my breath. Wow. He looked like a supermodel.

"Hello, there. Are you Alice Lozanna?" He asked in a friendly tone.

"Why, yes I am. You must be Jacob Wullback, CEO of this law company?" I questioned.

"Of course I am. You can just call me Jacob. Come in, let's get started." He replied.

As soon as I sat down, he started firing question after question.

"What kind of law education did you receive?"

"Are you able to handle lots of tasks at the same time?"

"Are you a reliable person that can be counted on upon at any given time?"

"Which schools did you attend?"

"Do you have any family members that live with you?"

I answered all the questions as truthfully and as professionally as I possibly could, but I choked up at the last on.

"I- I- I do have family that lives in the town next over, and as you can see, my child," I patted my belly softly.

Jacob cocked an eyebrow.

"I see. Who is the lucky father?" He asked in a cool voice.

"Um, well, it's complicated." I rambled.

"Well, good thing I still have plenty of time," Jacob said in a lighter voice, sitting back in his chair.

"Okay then. Well, the father of my child is my ex-husband," I murmured.

"Really? That isn't so complicated," Jacob said in such a joking tone that it sounded like teasing. "Wait. Ex-husband?"

"He wanted a divorce because he thought I was cheating on him," I mumbled.

Jacob sucked in a breath.

"Yeowch. That hurts. You didn't actually cheat on him, did you?"

"Of course not! We met in middle school, and it was like love at first sight," I snapped back.

I really didn't know why I was saying this stuff. Just something about Jacob that really gets to me...

"Well, in that case, you're hired!" Jacob replied cheerfully.

"Wait really?" I gasped.

"Yup. You have all the requirements, and it seems like you care a lot." He didn't specify what exactly though...

"Plus, all the others were kinda terrible," Jacob muttered under his breath. I raised an eyebrow at him.

He grinned back.

Inside, my heart was doing jumping jacks. I haven't felt this way towards another since, well, Daniel. However, the rational part of me was screaming WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!?!?!?!?!

Jacob cleared his throat. I didn't notice I was staring.

"Well, just a few pointers. My ex-girlfriend may drop around sometimes, and FYI, she gets quite possessive so just be careful. Also, there is a dress code. I have provided it for you, and also you can start tomorrow, or if you want to hang around here a little longer, that's fine." He winked at me, handing me my uniform.

I could tell that my face even felt red.

"uhh, I'll just go..." I stammered.

"Wait, before you go, do you have a place to stay? I mean if you're kicked out and all that, and y'know, pregnant," He asked.

"Oh well, I actually do, my friend offered me to live with her, so I'm good. But thanks for offering," I replied, blushing slightly.

When I got back to Gabrielle's house, I was bouncing with excitement. I opened the front door and yelled:

"Gabby! Guess what! I got the job!" I yelled excitedly.

Just then, Gabby entered the doorway with a solemn face.

I picked up her mood instantly. Not much could make Gabrielle sad, so I had to know what happened.

"What's wrong?" I asked.

"Oh, Alice. I'm so so so sorry. But, I don't think I can live here anymore," she sobbed. "My little brother's extremely sick. I can't stay here. I have to go back home to take care of him since my parents are on a business trip. I'm so sorry I can't stay here with you. Tonight is going to be my last day," she continued.

I hesitated for the fraction of a second.

"Gabby, there's nothing you have to apologize for. Go take care of your family, I can stay myself," I consoled her.

"but that's the thing," she wailed. "If I leave this house with you for any extended amount of time, we're both gonna be kicked out!"
