It had been a long day at school and Ellie had plopped herself in front of the television. She flicked around a bit until she found something entertaining to watch, a replay of an old show she used to watch when she was younger.
"Maddie," She called out, not sure if her sister was even home yet, "That show we used to watch is on,"
No reply, Madison must have missed her bus home or maybe she was at a friends house and was coming home later.
"Maddie missed the bus again, i'm going into town to collect her now," Ellie heard her mum say from the kitchen.
Ellie laughed, it was typical for her sister to be late for things, she was very forgetful at times.
"Can I come, for the drive," Ellie was already bored of the kids show she had tried to entertain herself with.
She got into the back seat of the car, she was always funny about sitting in the front seat and always insisted on sitting behind the drivers seat even if there was no one else in the car. It worked out fine because, as the older sister, Madison found herself entitled to the front seat anyway.
There was only a two year age gap and people often mistook them for twins, because they look so similar. It got to the point that Madison dyed her brown hair blonde last year. Not because she didn't like looking like Ellie, because they liked being alike, but because people found it difficult to distinguish them.
Now Madisons hair has grown out and faded slightly so it was a slightly dirty blonde colour, she still looked remarkably like her sister but could be told apart now.
As they drove, Ellie stared out the window. Thinking about her life, she was grateful for everything that she had, friends, family and especially Maddie.
She wasn't extremely popular in school, she only had one good friend but they rarely talked outside of school. Ellie honestly preferred to hang out with Maddie and her friends, Maddie pretended to be annoyed but she really didn't mind.
The school where Maddie was supposed to catch the bus from, was only a fifteen minute drive from their house. But the bus route was much longer as it went around the whole town before getting to the estate they lived in.
Ellie wondered if Maddie purposely missed the bus so often so she could be picked up instead.
They pulled up im the bus lane of the school, all of the buses and other students had left. It was just Madison waiting under a tree.
"Heya," Madison said as she approached the car.
"This is the last time i'm picking you up from school," Their mum said, both Madison and Ellie knew she wasn't serious. She said that every time.
Madison shot Ellie a quick 'I'm in trouble' look, and Ellie couldn't help but giggle.
What would she do with out her big sister? She thought to herself.
They drove home in silence, Ellie and Madison occasionally throwing each other a playful smirk.
Ellie watched her sister, she was so perfect compared to herself. Even though Ellie was never jealous she couldn't help but notice that Madison was the smarter and prettier sister.
Ellie was always in her own little world, sometimes she felt as though nothing was real, she often zoned out and blocked off the world. Daydreaming, Maddie called it.
Ellie liked that thought, daydreaming was an escape. She would think about her life and how not a lot had changed , things had stayed pretty much the same for the last five years.
Before then, she couldn't remember much, and what she did remember was hazy.
She filled in the gaps by what Maddie had told her, since she was older and could remedy further back.
Ellie recognised the feeling of the car pulling in to the driveway and immediately sat up to look out the window.
"Home sweet home," Maddie said, as she always did whenever they arrived back from even the shortest of journeys.
They both hopped out of the car and straight inside, the door had been left unlocked.
"Did you miss the bus on purpose?" Ellie joked,
"What, no way," Maddie winked slightly, giggling like a little girl.
