Chapter 24-Keefe

I couldn't breath. I saw faces around me and heard voices but it was all a blur. She broke herself saving me. I tried to get up but my legs wouldn't hold. The last thing I remember was someone screaming, before the world went black. 

"Keefe. Wake up." Someone said. I can't open my eyes.

"It's okay Keefe. It's me. I need you to wake up." I I turned on my other side to show I was conscious. Then I tried talking.

"Hi." I said.

"KEEFE!" I was tackle hugged. My eyes shot open. It was Biana.

"Where...... Soph...ie?" I managed.

"Oh." She looked away, but not before I watched a tear roll down her cheek. That's when everything came back to me.

" You... have.....t-to..let....me...see h-her." It came out as more of a question. She just nodded and rushed out the room. As soon as she was gone, tears started streaming down my face. I cried for what felt like an hour, before Mr. Forkle cam into the room.

"I see you're awake. Ms. Vacker informed me that you would like to see Sophie. I can't take you to her yet, but I assure you, Evangeline will be doing a healing as soon as possible. I hope you feel better Keefe. We are going to need you if we want this to work." He said. With that, he held up a crystal and leapt away. I sat in silence for a few minutes. Then all of a sudden, Sophie was in front of me.

"Hi Keefe." She said.

"Hey Foster. You're okay!" I said.

"Yes. I'm awake. You know, I was thinking, maybe we should run away. Just me and you. We can join the Neverseen." She said.

"No. We should stay with the Black Swan." I answered.

"Ok." With that she took out a medler and pointed it at me. I was so shocked. Then, she shot it. I bolted up screaming. It was just a dream. Fitz rushed into the room.

"Keefe? What's wrong?" He asked. He had bags under his eyes and his hair was all rippled. His tunic was the same one he was wearing when.....

"Sorry. It was a nightmare." I said.

"If you ever need to talk, I'm still your best friend." He said, adding a weak smile. 

" Thanks." I responded. He left the room, but as soon as he was gone, Dex rushed in. 

"Keefe! Are you okay?" He asked.

"Yeah, I'll be fine. How are you?" Dex looked 10 times worse then Sophie. His hair was a giant mess, his tunic was crippled everywhere, and the bags under his eyes were much darker.

"I'm holding up, I guess." He answered.

"Yeah. I just... I don't get it." I told him. I needed to tell someone and I don't think Fitz would want to talk about it.

"What do you mean?"

"She just healed me and then she just......." A traitorous tear rolled down my cheek.

"It's okay Keefe. No one blames you. Well actually, I would stay away from Grady." He sighed.

"Figures." I said. I gave him a weak smile which he returned. 

"Mr. Forkle said Evangeline is going to heal her, but she needs training first, and a guide. Apparently, they are trying to find someone to be her cognate, so the healing won't be as difficult. Fitz offered, but they denied since he's Sophie's cognate." He rambled.

"Yeah. I get that. He wasn't in really good shape either. I don't blame Forkle. How is everyone else holding up. I've only seen you, Biana, and Fitz." I told him.

"Well, Everyone is upset, not as bad as the 4 of us, but it's really affecting Linh quite a bit. Marella was also pretty sad. Even Stina and Maruca were being sympathetic. Wylie and Tam were pretty sad too. I think I saw Tam shed a few tears, and Wylie was sad because well, the girl who his dad was hiding, who also fixed his dad, just......." He didn't finish. Neither of them new what to say, so they sat in silence for a few minutes.

"Okay. I should probably go check on Biana and Fitz. The 3 of us have been spending a lot of time together, it's just easier for us I guess. Even though I normally wouldn't want to hang out with them. Plus I should check on the adults. They're a big mess. Especially Grady and Edaline. I'll see you later." He said as he left. He shut the door behind him as he left. I let out some more tears. I need to cry them all now so I can help Mr. Forkle. 

We will bring Sophie back.
