I've been walking for quite a while now, its 4:53am. It's been an hour and fifty minutes since I left the house. I finally get to a park on the a different side of the city. I didn't know where I was. I open the gate and slowly walk down the steep hill after it. I walk to the furthest bench as I didn't want to be anywhere near the entrance. I stroll down the path listening to the birds tweeting as I steadily breathe in the fresh air. I settle at a bench and get the blanket out my bag and then use my bag as a pillow. I try and get comfy but the cold metal of the bench is numbing my skin through my layers of clothes. I bring the blanket up to my face as my nose was as cold as anything as well as my neck being exposed and numb to the cold air too. I try and close my eyes but I didn't feel safe. How do homeless people do this? Fall asleep out in the open where anything could happen, where anyone could do anything. I didn't feel safe to close my eyes. I felt vulnerable to anything that could be lurking around. It suddenly got colder and I started to shiver, the blanket wasn't enough to keep me warm. I couldn't feel my toes in the end of my shoes, I couldn't feel my fingers, I couldn't feel my face. I couldn't control myself, I was shivering roughly and it exhausted me, I tried to relax but it was too cold however I managed to fall asleep in the end.—————————
I wake up to see the bright blue sky above me. I untangle myself from the blanket that I am wrapped in and sit up. I take my phone out my bag and check the time. 6:42am it reads as I see a middle aged couple start to approach me so I put my phone back in my bag. "Have you slept here all night?" The woman asks
"Um, yeah." I reply with
"Oh my god! How come? Don't you have anywhere to go?"
"No, er not really" It was just then that I realised, I don't have a home, I no longer have somewhere I can go where I'm safe. I don't belong anywhere, this is my life now.
"I wish we could help, I really do but we don't live anywhere near here. We don't even have any money on us."
"Oh, its fine." I say, unsure of how to act as this has never happened before.
"How old are you?" She asks
"Um, Seventeen." I reply with
"Aww. Dear its just that you're so vulnerable here. Do you live around this area?"
"Not really." I say as I look down to the floor.
"How long have you been living like this?"
"Oh just a day, I err, I ran away."
"Aww, Sweetie, why? Do you have a good reason for it?"
"Well, I just wasn't accepted and I can't really go back."
"Do you have a phone on you?"
"Umm, yeah."
"Do you want to take our number if you need something?" She said, I thought it seemed a bit sketchy, like, they were nice and all but I wasn't going to trust someone that quick. Even if I did, I wouldn't do anything with the number, I'd be too scared to phone them anyway.
"Err, no I'm fine"
"Are you sure? It's just that this isn't a good place here, there's some horrible people out."
"Um, I'm sure I'll be fine."
"Alright then. My name is Julie by the way, and this is Mark" She motions at who I am assuming to be her husband. "We are going to come back in out forty minutes to come check on you. Will you still be here?
"Um, I'm not sure." I say kind of awkwardly
"Okay well we'll come back here anyway, I hope you'll be okay, bye." They say as I wave to them and they walk away into the distance.(Authors note real quick,
Just thought I'd say really quickly, Mark and Julie are actually real people and those are their real names. This conversation is something very similar to a real one I had after I ran away from home for a couple of days. My mum ended up calling the police and they tracked down my phone. They were really nice to me and when they came back to check on me they came with a bottle of water and a sandwich as well as some money for me so I thought I'd put them in my story.)——————————
I go on my phone and I message Cindy telling her where I've gone and that I am okay. I feel awful for leaving her but I couldn't stay in that house any longer. I sit back on the bench and my eyes start to water as I start thinking about what happened last night. In the corner of my eye I see two girls, looking at me, they looked like they were talking about me but my vision was blurry. They start to get close to me and then I hear her. "Hey, are you okay?" an extremely familiar voice says as my stomach goes weak and my heart beats faster because I know exactly who it sounds like. I look up and see her. Her beautiful smile, her sparkling eyes, her perfect face was right there, right in front of me.
"My name is-"
"Maihua" I whisper, in shock. This can't be happening, its too unreal. I say its a dream but I'm feeling far too overwhelmed to be dreaming. I had butterflies in my stomach, just from looking at her. I eventually got so emotional I started crying, crying of happiness because I had loved her or so long and to see her in real life, it just got to me.
"Maihua?" I said with streams of tears falling down my face.
"Hey, hey, its okay. What's wrong? I mean, you don't have to say." She says as she puts her arms around me and hugs me. This was her best moment of my life, I couldn't have been happier to run away, every piece of it was worth it, even if I got to see Maihua just this one time.
After we'd hugged, Maihua then sits down on the bench next to me and Gaonha, her sister, sits down as well, on the other side of me "How do you know my name? Do you know me from TikTok?" She asks
"Yeah, I'm a, I'm really big fan." I say, with my eyes still watering up because I'm so happy right now.
"Aw Bubba." She says as she gets a tissue out her pocket and offers it me to dry my eyes with. "Is everything okay? Why are you out here?"
"I uh, I came out to my family. It didn't go very well." I say biting my lip trying not to eat upset about it.
"Oh that's horrible, I'm so sorry that happened to you. Can you not go back?"
I shake my head and just say "She said I wasn't her daughter." And try so hard not to start crying again.
"I'm so so sorry. Look, if you have nowhere else to go, you can stay with us for the time being. I'm not going to force you but the offer is there if you want it okay."
"Why are you being so nice to me? You don't even know who I am."
"Well, me and Gaonha once also had nowhere to go, we didn't have a home, nowhere safe to stay. We completely understand your situation and want to help but, like I said, I'm not going force you."
"Umm, o-okay, I'll come with you guys."——————————
I sit there, quietly, unsure of what to do or what to say. "Would you like a drink?" Gaonha asks "Yes please, what do you have?"
"Well we've got coke, which is what I usually have, we have red bull which are Maihua's but she wont mind. We've got orange juice or apple juice."
"Please can I have an orange juice."
"Yeah absolutely." She goes to the kitchen and Maihua walks back into the room sending butterflies to my stomach. She is absolutely stunning, I can't get over the fact that I'm in her house. It's unreal. She comes over and sits down next to me on the couch making me feel like my heart is about to explode. There isn't much space between us and I am absolutely screaming inside while I look at her. How much I wouldn't give to kiss her right now, I try and keep it together because to her, I'm only a stranger. "I'm sorry about the mess, its just that I'm moving out into an apartment and so my things are kind of all over the place."
"No, its- its fine." I say, resisting the urge to look at her soft lips or to hold her hand.
"Don't be shy, make yourself at home and if you need anything you can always ask us, okay?"
"Yes and thank you so much for letting me stay here."
"It's fine don't worry about it. Also, I never got your name."
"Y/n." I said smiling, perhaps maybe a bit too much but I couldn't help it. She knows who I am. Maihua Lee knows my name, what I look like, what I sound like. It's all so surreal.—————————
They had a spare mattress that they pulled out their garage and into Maihua's room for me to sleep on. It was now probably about 12:30am, everyone had gone to bed and me and Maihua were both lying on mattresses on opposite sides of a small room. Maihua was on her phone and I was just lying there, crying quietly in the dark. Yes I am happy as to how it turned out and that I know live with my FREAKING IDOL but like, I'm still going to miss my family, especially my sister. I sniff and its enough for Maihua to notice that I've been crying. "Bubba, is everything okay." She gets out of bed and turns on a small lamp then comes over to me. "My family, I just-" I burst into tears before I could finish the sentence "Hey look, it's gonna got be okay." She pulls me into a hug "Y/n, you're a beautiful girl and there is absolutely nothing wrong with you. Your family may not accept you, but we do." She says pulling out of the hug and offering me tissues, which she always seems to have on her. "Thank you." I say "Anything could've happened to me right now if it wasn't for you guys."
