I WAS EIGHT WHEN DAD WENT MISSING, he told me the day before he left for Afghanistan that he would be right back just in time for my ninth birthday. That he had something special planned for the both of us.

He got down on one knee with a smile on his face as he held out his pinky, promising me that we would go stargazing together and that we'll build our own telescope to search endlessly for constellations.

My little self was beyond excited to see the stars in their natural glory, to see millions or even trillions of them litter the sky, and to praise that the universe allowed itself to open a small part of themselves up for us.

I remember wrapping my small pinky around his, my clear blue eyes looking directly at his earthy brown ones as I asked him, "Daddy, do you think I'll ever reach the stars?"

I don't think I've ever seen so much sincerity cross his face, "Birdie, I know you will, and when you do I'll be there holding your hand every second of the way."
