They put me in a room, well, cell would be more accurate. I sit there waiting for what feels like forever. I watch the clock on the wall in front of me. Twelve hours pass before I give up counting. The room is totally and completely white. I'm going crazy.
Eventually, a man walks in. He is slender, but muscular, with pale olive skin, dark reddish colored hair, his eyes are hidden behind dark black sunglasses, and he is wearing a suit. He looks like an adult, or like he's trying to look like one. I might not have noticed it if I hadn't been in here for so long any bit of difference in scenery is completely compelling, but he looks young. He's older than me, I think, I can't see his eyes to really tell, but he appears to be about 22, 24 at oldest. What is he doing? Why is he here? All the high ranking jobs like this go to Wise who have been working for years as they move up. He's far too young for that, but he is dress similar to an official. He is wearing all black, like everyone in our society except for a blue button up shirt under his suit jacket. Then I notice he doesn't have a pin. It's mandatory to wear your level pin above your heart everyday or there are serious repercussions.
Noticing the lack of pin I say, before he says anything, "your level pin is missing. You should get a replacement before you get in trouble."
He chuckles which confuses me he should be panicked, but he isn't. He didn't even look down to check that it was missing. Then, he speaks, "Hello Jack, I am Sawyer." He called me Jack. No one calls me that except my friends and family. I am accustomed to so many people calling me that I nearly miss it, but my senses are still very honed in on my surroundings. I don't know this man he's not from my level or class I would recognize him. Any official who had my information would call me Jackalynn, my legal name. How does he know... why does he use it so causally?
I interrupt, "W-why did you call me that?"
"What?"
"Jack. How did you-."
"My apologies, Jackalynn," he corrects and continues sans explanation, "hand me your pin please and we'll switch rooms. Don't worry, you won't get in any trouble for taking it off in public. The ceremony is over and everyone remembers it the way they should." The way they should? What does that mean? He holds out his hand for my level pin. I'm so confused, but none the less I reach up, unpin it from my shirt and hand it to him. He places it in his suit pant pocket and pulls a key from the other to unlock the door. He then opens the door and gestures for me to exit first.
We walk for a while down a long narrow hall. I've never been in this part of the ceremony hall before. I doubt I'm still in the ceremony hall at this point. "Where am I? The ceremony hall?" I ask.
"Yes," he replies and then becomes silent again.
I can see the end of the hallway there is a door I think we'll go in, but then we turn left and down another hallway. Three doors to the right down this new hallway is the one he opens and directs me to go in. "Sit," he says as I walk in to a office style room with decorations, photos, plant, and other office type things. He gestures at the desk as I stand still not focusing on what he wants. He walks around me and pulls out the chair in front of the desk. "Sit," he says again more firmly, like a command, but somehow remains calm, polite, and composed at the same time. I listen and do as I'm told this time as he sits across from me on the opposite side of the desk. Then, we talk.
