Mitch's POV

"Please don't tell me you meant that."

Kermit's ghost floats next to me; I'm sitting alone in my room again, with the ghost of a dead friend to keep me company.

How depressing.

"I did," I reply.

Kermit tilts his head, as if he's deep in thought. "Jerome is calling you an - " he pauses again " - idiot, scumbag, traitor - okay, not gonna repeat the rest of those words."

Leave it to Jerome to add humor to a situation like this.

I sigh, running a hand through my already messed up brown hair. "I'm just mad. And I don't know what to do."

"Jerome says forgive and forget," Kermit replies. "Being mad isn't gonna get you anywhere."

"Yeah, but..." My voice trails off. Maybe I should just run away; dump all the responsibility on everyone else. It's not like they need me here, anyways.

"Maybe Ty didn't mean it," Kermit suggests. "You don't know Ty like I did. He would do act like that sometimes, then be completely fine the next day."

"But does he leave you with bruises all over your body? Thought not."

"Mitch, please," Kermit sighs.

I walk over to the window, resting my head on my arms. The chaos outside has mostly died down. The injured have been moved to the infirmary.

"I need to go for a walk," I say.

"I guess I'll talk to you later, then," Kermit replies, vanishing.

I limp down the stairs and through the main hall, where many of the recruits are gathered. Most of them whisper to their friends when they see me.

I'm guessing word of the attack has spread quickly throughout the Army. As I pass, I hear bits and pieces of their conversations.

"Ty attacked Mitch..."

"...going insane..."

"...wasn't his fault..."

"...hurt really badly..."

I don't care about what they think. All I know is, I'm furious at Ty for attacking me, and at Sky for keeping secrets.

After all, trust is the most important foundation in a good relationship, whether it's with a friend or family member.

I walk outside, past the guards and the gates, and into the main city. I pull my hood up so that I'm unrecognizable, then wander aimlessly for a while.

Jerome and I did this, such a long time ago...

Mitch, stop thinking about Jerome!

I sigh, watching the people go about their daily business, not having a care in the world. It's the late afternoon, so people have just gotten out of school and work.

It's been a long time since my life was that simple.

After a while, I get bored of wandering around the city, entering the woods and walking in the direction of Sunnyshore City.

It's peaceful and quiet in here, but the shadows of the trees have an eerie feeling to them, like something could attack you at any moment. I feel a strange sense of foreboding, and pull out one of my knives.

I think I hear something rustle in the bushes, but I push the thought aside, scanning the bushes for anything that could pop out at me.

I'm so busy looking up that I don't realize that I've tripped over a body.
