05 - Nellie
For the second time this week, AJ woke up to commotion on the outside of her bedroom door. She stretched and got out of bed before pausing. She looked around her room. Instead of seeing the pillow and blanket cot she and JJ fell asleep on, she saw all the covers and pillows folded messily and stacked into a pile with a note on top.
As much as I appreciate you're mom for letting me stay, she scares the hell out of me, and I'm almost positive your dad is 10x worse. Come to the dock around 11ish. Day after a hurricane is a free day.
p.s. you snore like a cigarette smoker with asthma
The girl snorted and shook her head at the note in her hand. She put the note on her nightstand, and shuffled into her bathroom to prepare for the day. The girl then walked right back out to get her phone for her music.
"Can't do shit without my music," the girl murmured as she played her morning playlist. Nicki Minaj's Roman Holiday poured from the phone's speakers. This is one of AJ's favorite songs. Sure it doesn't make one lick of sense, but it never fails to make her laugh and give her energy.
"This right here gonna make a bitch die! And this right here gonna make a bitch cry! And if we're being honest I am such a great guy!" James, AJ's dad rapped along with the song, as he passed her room and opened her door. AJ heard the fast patter of bare feet across the wooden floor as Jackson ran from wherever he was to join in.
Jackson bursts into her room, dancing wildly to the beat and making the same exact sounds Nicki makes in this part of the song. The dancing boy points to his sister, who's brushing her teeth, to say it's her turn to dance. The girl trying to finish her morning routine rolls her eyes at the still dancing boy and bobs her head to the beat.
"You can do better than that and you know it!" Jackson taunted his sister. AJ knew what her brother was trying to do and it was working. With the toothbrush still in her mouth AJ dances out of the bathroom and joins her brother and dad in their dancing.
Renee walks up the stairs from the kitchen to tell her husband that the generator was working and the power was back up and running. As she reached the top of the stairs the mother heard laughter and music coming from her daughter's room and immediately knew what was going on.
The dance sessions started when her oldest was about 8. The song that was now playing had just came out and 4 year old Jackson loved the weird sounds the rapper made in the song. He'd demand for it everyday and one day the brother and sister began dancing wildly in the back seat when the song came on the radio.
Renee smiles every time she thinks of that memory.
"Hey ma!" Now finished with brushing her teeth, AJ greets her mom when she finally notices her in the midst of her dancing. "Do you know what time it is?"
