When I woke up, my head felt clearer than it had in weeks. The sun from the window above the sofa with a nice view of the front porch, warmed my face and pillow. I turned to see Kie still passed out , her caramel skin glowing against our white sheet. I smiled and breathed in, pushing myself up to stretch.
I walked out onto the porch for some fresh air and noticed a figure out near the trees. I walked out the screen door, wincing as it slammed, knowing I probably woke the rest of my friends up.
Out of the corner of my eye I noticed a blue and white truck pulled into the driveway. It read Kildare Country Sheriff Department. My head snapped back to the figure out near the water, I stepped closer and noticed she was not one of my friends, but a police woman, poking around in the hurricane mess that still trashed the yard.
I quickly turned around and snuck back up to the house, frantically looking in each room for John. I passed where JJ had fallen asleep and check the next door. Locked. I walked past the kitchen and turned the next handle, revealing John as it creaked open. He was passed out on his stomach, a large purple bruise covering his right eye.
"John." I whispered, unsure of how to wake my cousin. I walked over and pushed his shoulder. "John?" I asked again.
Panicked, he lifted his head quickly, looking around frightened. "Fuck- Tav. You scared me." He groaned, stretching his tan arms as wide as they could go, then relaxing his body once again.
"Yeah- I'm sorry about that but um, you see." I looked back toward the front door. "The police are here?" I started, causing him to stand alert again. He got out of bed quickly and moved past me toward the front. After chasing him silently down the hallway, we peered out the screen door. She was now walking toward the house.
"Shit." He murdered. "Who else is awake?"
I shrugged my shoulders and looked at him with wife eyes. "Fuck- JJ has the gun with him." I whispered.
"You have to get him out of here, she could know exactly who it was. A lot of people we knew were there last night." He sighed rubbing his face, then looked down. "And I need clothes."
We back away from the door, Kie stirring in her sleep. I reached over to wake her, but was stopped by John. "No, don't bother. You have to get JJ out of here for me. The gun too." He walked quickly back to his room. "Please!" He whisper called, then disappeared around the doorframe as a knock rang out on the wooden door.
"Fuck." I growled, sneaking back towards the room JJ slept in. I shut the door quietly and hastily moved over to where he laid. On his stomach, his face was turned towards me, a small frown resting on his open, slightly drooling mouth. The blanket had been kicked down by his feet, revealing his long tanned legs. I brought my eyes back up to his face, trying to remember what was happening as I wasted time watching. I cursed at myself in my head for wanting to let him continue to sleep.
Fuck it was cute.
"JJ." I whispered, placing my hand on his back and rubbing slowly. I didn't want to startle him as well. I heard the front door open in the distance.
"Shit. JJ-" I coaxed as he began to stir. His eyes open slightly and his frown turned into a smile. He opened his mouth to speak and I quickly covered it with my hand, panicking. His eyes widened confused. He mumbled underneath my palm.
"Shh." I whispered. "I'm so sorry, but we have to go. I'll explain later. Get your shit and the gun." I slowly lifted my hand. "Please trust me." I spoke quietly. The movement in the living room began to grow louder and I heard Kie's voice.
"Come on." I looked around, stopping at the window by the back of the room. Opening it quickly, I watched as JJ started to get dressed and stuck the weapon back into his pants. As he fumbled around with his boots I urged him to hurry.
