Chapter 2
I continued to stare at the little dragon, my mouth open in shock. Sure, I knew the basics of the legends, but this couldn't be right. According to legend, dragons were the most powerful creatures on Grælin. I knew that dragons only hatched when they became bonded to someone. But, that couldn't be me. It just couldn't. There had never been a human Bonder. Legends always said that Humans had searched the land for thousands of years for dragon eggs, and they would find the eggs but be unable to hatch the dragon inside. That made humans look like the weaker race, one that couldn't Bond to dragons to become Bonded.
In my whole life, I had never even seen one of the Bonded. They seldom came to human villages unless there was trouble, they were usually too busy keeping the peace of the realm. I only knew that the Bonded were strong, and brave.
"What's happening, little dragon?" I found myself asking it, as though it could explain everything to me. "This shouldn't be possible." I said quietly. The little dragon mewled to me like a kitten would. I laughed lightly and smiling at the sound.
"You know, I've never heard of a white dragon. I've heard of blue, yellow, green, red, and even orange, but never white. It might just be me though. I don't know very much about dragons, you know." I told it with a smile. "Is it ok if I pet you?" I asked it, knowing very well that it couldn't answer me. It mewled again, making me smile once again. "I'll go ahead and take that as a yes."
I reached out and slowly laid a hand on the dragon's head. Its' scales felt cold and smooth, not unlike the cave it was born in. I could hear a humming noise coming from it, and it pushed its' head into my hand. Apparently it liked being pet.
"You really seem like a sweet dragon." I told it. "I don't know why I'm talking to you though. It's not like you're going to talk back. I don't even know what gender you are." I said softly, still petting it.
"I'm male." A voice said, and I jumped back. The dragon was looking at me, with what could only have been a smile on its' face.
"You can talk?" I asked loudly. It nodded slowly, its' blue eyes shining at me.
"Of course I can." The voice said, sounding masculine already even though its' owner was only a few minutes old.
"Then why didn't you answer me!" I said loudly, not angry but annoyed. I felt stupid that I had been talking to him like a dumb animal.
"You were talking to me so nice, I just didn't want to interrupt you." He said, sounding forlorn. He was holding his head down, as though he was upset.
"Oh, it's alright." I told the dragon gently, somewhat amused that it was upset. "You're very kind for not wanting to interrupt me." I said, and it nodded with another of its' dragon smiles. "Now, what do we name you?" I asked with a frown.
"I don't know, it's up to you." He said, shaking his head. I frowned again.
"Why would it be up to me?" I asked the dragon quickly. He smiled again.
"You're my Bonder, you're supposed to name me." He said, and I shook my head quickly.
''No, I can't be. No human has ever been a Bonder. I can't be the first human Bonded, I can't be!" I exclaimed, watching as the dragon took a step closer to me. I didn't move.
"But you are Reaya. You're Bonded to me, and I'm your dragon." He said softly. I shook my head wildly.
"How do you know my name?" I asked quickly. He did his dragon smile again.
