The knock comes on my door. "Lillian! Are you awake? Coriane's here!" Those words jolt me awake. Coriane is the daughter of King Tiberias Calore VII, or Cal, and Queen Mare Barrow. I'm Lillian Osanos, a lady of the high house of Osanos. It's just me, my father, and a few Red servants who decided to stay on in our big, empty house. I never knew my mother, and my father refuses to speak of her. Coriane, or Cori as I call her, is my best friend. She was named after her grandmother, Cal's mother. She can control both flame and electricity. I am a nymph, like the rest of house Osanos, and I can control water. After dressing, I hurry down to the foyer to greet her. She's waiting there, dressed in red. I'm dressed in a blue gown. What a pair we must make, her Silver and a newblood, with red blood in her veins, dressed in red, and me, Silver through and through, in blue.
We took a transport to the Hall of the Sun, where others our age from the court were enjoying the sunshine on a balcony. Though I loathe these events, as the heir to house Osanos, I am required to attend. There was a mix of Silvers from the high houses, common Silvers, newbloods, and Reds. Everyone bows or curtsies when Cori walks in. No one can ever understand why Cori is friends with me, but they tolerate it.
As I mingle with everyone else, Lady Raina Merandus walks up to me. Her smile is laced with venom. Uh oh. "So, Lady Osanos," she purrs. "How are you today?" I manage to choke out a reply. "Fine, thanks." Then she grabs my arm and hisses, "Stay away from Coriane or else." The she saunters off to chat with Cori. Most people wouldn't find her threat that serious, but coming from a Merandus, I know what it is. A genuine threat. A threat on my life.
