Coriane and I haven't spoken in months. Why would she be here now? I hastily pull on a blue and green day dress. Hurrying downstairs, I find Coriane waiting at the bottom. She looks nervous. Why, I can't say. "Can we speak in private?" she asks. "Sure, I guess," I say, and lead her to my private sitting room.

She's very uneasy. Finally, she breaks the silence. "I know we haven't talked in a while, but-" I cut her off. "That's an understatement. You're too busy hanging out with Raina to spare a word for me. And that's after Raina told me to stay away from you!" Coriane looks confused. "Lillian, Raina told me that you didn't like me anymore. I didn't believe her, but then...I think she whispered to me." I take a minute to process this. "I'm sorry, Cori. What were you saying?" She sighs. "I found a book in my room. It was from my great-uncle Julian, and it had a note saying to give it to you."

I'm confused. "I never knew him. Why would there be a book for me?" She's very reserved. "I can't really say." I look into her eyes. "Coriane Calore. Tell me." I'm surprised to hear that my voice sounds like a singer's. That was Julian Jacos' ability. Her voice is flat when she speaks. "I think it has something to do with Coriane Jacos. And that you may be related to the Jacos family." I broke eye contact and she seemed to "wake up". She looked confused. "What was that?" I can't answer except for, "I think I need to see that book. Now."
