I knew better than to take a threat from a Merandus lightly. Take Elara Merandus, for example. She could kill you with barely a thought. Raina grabs Cori's arm and leads her off somewhere, giving me a triumphant look over her shoulder. I sigh sadly. Time to find a new best friend, since Raina made it clear that Cori is not an option.

A hand touches my arm, and I jump. Standing next to me is Evan Merandus, Raina's brother. He looks concerned. "Are you alright?" he asks quietly. I frown. "Why do you care?" Evan sighs. "Y'know, not all whispers are heartless. My sister is, but I'm not." Rolling my eyes, I walk away, but his words stick with me. I sneak a glance over my shoulder. Evan is standing there with a forlorn look on his face. I can tell he's not faking it. Looking closer, I notice everyone skirting around him. They're afraid of him.

I turn fully around and walk back to him. He's shocked. I take a deep breath. "I'm sorry for the way I treated you before. It was very rude of me to assume all whispers are the same." A true smile comes over his face. "It's fine. You're not the first. Sadly, you are one of the few who've come around. Shall we take a walk?"

A few months have passed since that day. Cori doesn't talk to me anymore. She spends all her time with Raina. I have become good friends with Evan, though. And it angers Raina, so that's a bonus. As I sit down to read, my father knocks on my door. "Lillian? Princess Coriane is here to see you!" My eyes widen. What could my ex-best friend want?

*I will write short chapters but will try to update every other day at least*
