The room is pitch black. I literally can't see a damn thing, I can't hear anything either. "Jeff?" I call out into the darkness. What the hell is going on. "Jane.. W-where are you." Jeff's voice sounds scratchy, and painful. Where are we. I stand from whatever I was on, and a small breeze floats into the room. It's chilling as ice. I stumble over what I think might be a stool, but it's best just to keep going. Especially if I want to find out what the hell is going on.
I slam into a wall, normally I probably would've been pissed, but this is a relief. I can scan the wall to see if I can find a switch or maybe some sort of light source I can use. The walls are completely bare and rough to the touch. My hands begin to rub raw as I continue to search for light. I dab my hand on my tongue to see if it's bleeding and if there might be a substance on the wall. Probably not the smartest idea. The taste leaves a strange metallic zing. Blood, great so now my hands are bleeding, there isn't any light, and Jeff is somewhere in here probably hurt. Finally I come across a switch of some sort. I flick it on, and a small lamp illuminates a corner. A desk has a lighter, and a candle, and a little bit of alcohol. Wonderful, now I have memories. God damnit. I light the candle and walk around the room, I find Jeff in a heap, his breathing is shallow.
"What happened?" I sit next to him, I hold his head up and shine the candle near it. His face is bruised and bloodied up. Is mine the same? I haven't taken any time to check if I've even been injured aside from scaling the rough hewn walls. Aside from the light in the corner and this small candle, I still can hardly see a damn thing.
"You were asleep.." Jeff muttered that to me before he started coughing, "Something.. I don't know, it came.." he started coughing again. Something had to of gotten him good, "I tried stopping it..." He moved his hand from his stomach. There's blood. A lot of it. "He, it.. I couldn't stop it.." I don't make him speak anymore. Whatever it was, it really hurt the bastard. I make him move his hand away, I unzip his jacket, there's a small gash. enough to cause a lot of blood, so I don't know why he's coughing. I make him let me take his shirt off even though it's cold. His chest is bruised all over, so at least from what I see no internal bleeding. Good.
I lift him onto his legs and help him walk, I find an opening in the wall, I kick at it and watch the materiel fall onto the cold ground. It reveals an opening, still pitch black. Of course. Jeff reassures me that he can walk, but I make him hold onto my shirt as I venture in first.I have the candle in hand in front of me, it seems like a passage of some sort, definitely not the doorway that's for sure. Maybe we can sneak up on whatever is here, or just leave entirely. I seem to be in a lot better condition than Jeff so I could come back and hunt It. Whatever It is. "It's not really that big.. Just... Fast." Jeff spoke as loudly as he could, still huffing. I'm glad his loudest is still a soft whisper, I don't want to alarm whatever is here.
I feel like I'm dragging Jeff left and right through this cramped space, and it slowly gets narrower and narrower. Finally we come to a small opening, and there's just enough light to see through. I put the candle out and peered through. A strange looking things stood in the corner, it's eyes were pitch black almost soulless, it's fur seemed matted with tufts of white against its coal black fur. It wasn't shaped quite like a human, and not quite like a beast. It seemed almost beautiful, but then I realized I'd been looking too long for its spilled eyes caught with mine. I was staring into the eyes of a nameless creature who is crazed to kill. Wonderful, and now Jeff and I are basically stuck in this crevice. Even greater, I'm sure it can burst through this wall, and if what Jeff said was true, well we can't outrun the damn thing.
"Welcome. Glad you came down to visit numpkins." What? What is a numpkin? Why isn't it attacking nonetheless.
"Is that what attacked?" I whispered to Jeff, before the creature decided to come forward.
"No... Thats something different, I haven't seen it before." So whatever attacked us is still in here somewhere, and when I look up from Jeff it's beady eyes flash and what sounds like a mechanism unlocking, the wall opens up. I lift Jeff up, holding him close to me as we slowly walk away from the wall. It has us sit in old chairs lined up, some with old blood stains. Homey.
"I'm sure you're all wondering what this is, and how you've arrived at this... Discreet location." I noticed their voice sounded sickening. Like a thousand speaking at once, almost the work of the devil. What the hell is this monstrosity, "My name is Nümla, also known as The Night Walker's Keeper. Enticing, am I wrong? You see you're in a palace, hidden in a façade. This forest? Oh it's a lovely place to hide something, especially with a force that well, hasn't been used in centuries. No one can see, and no one can hear, no one can enter this castle near." Um.. Nümla seems very educated... But I'm not sure what she's talking about.
"No." That's all Jeff utters as he pushes me off of him and stands, shakily, but he stands. "This is wrong. How long have you been in my damn forest?!" Jeff is angry, this isn't going to be pleasant. I stand from the chair and tug at him, it's easy to have him sit since he's still very weak.
"Sweet boy, are you sure it's your forest? I recall the day you moved into my house. Remember those sounds? My Night Walker was warning you, but you pretended like it was nothing. Just an old house settling. This is my forest, one you trespass on. I saw your deed. Now you must pay, but not with pain or violence. Speaking of which, I'm sorry my little friend did quite a number." Nümla heads for a door, switches a pin, and something whirls out of the door. It's hurried and zooming everywhere. What the living hell?
"That's what got us..." He clung tightly to me, sheltering me.
"No need, I haven't told him to attack you. I simply released him." Nümla closely watched the creature, "Väsha, here." Väsha... That name.. No. No. No. No!
"Jeff explain to me what the hell is going on!" I'm furious, I'm so confused, the names are familiar, everything.. It's slamming me.
"Silence. You are in my area. You are unwelcome. The only way I will allow you and Jeff to stay here or in my house any longer is if you can bring me a body with which to feast. Jeff, that means no alcohol. I fair someone young, vibrant, alive. You will kill them here, preferably male, but if you must female is just as well. I want them by tomorrow, and from the town beyond the forest. I want my legacy to remain, it's been some time since I've been out to kill and out to scare. The town is becoming unaware. Go." What.. Jeff? Does he work with this thing? With Nümla?!
We are taken to the door and thrown into the wilderness. Jeff takes my hand and we run back to the house. He locks the door and we go up to his storage room upstairs. He grabs knives, lots of knives. I'm beginning to become frightened of him. Human or not... He is still a monster, and he needs to explain to me what is going on.
