I like being near Roman. He makes me feel warm. It's nice, comforting. He's kind of a dumb-ass, but so far he's been kind. After chemistry I went to English with him, but now I have debate and Roman's gone. Although, he did help me find my way here.

"Hi uh I'm new." I say quietly to the teacher. Mr. Barnes looks over to me.

"Virgil Storm?" I nod. "It's nice to meet you." He hands me a packet of papers. "Some information on the class. If you need help or have any questions let me know. We can talk after class or while everyone's working on today's assignment."

"Okay thank you."

"You can sit next to...Mr. Berry. Logan please raise your hand." A boy to the left of the room raises his hand without looking up from his book. I smile at Mr. Barnes and then make my way to sit next to Logan. I recognize him as the black haired boy from this morning. He looks up as I sit down.

"You are Virgil, correct?" I nod. "Well it seems as if you'll be my debate partner for the semester. I'm Logan."

"Virgil, but uh you already knew that. I'm sorry." I twirl my ring around my finger. I've grown accustomed to doing this when I'm anxious. It's yellow. Just yellow. Bright and pure. I'm sure my soulmate's ring has never been pure yellow. I look closer and see swirls of white. Happy and curious? I'm glad he's having a good day.

"Virgil?" I look up to Logan.

"Sorry, I zoned out."

"No need to apologize." He looks down at my ring and smiles at me. "They're in a good mood, but you haven't met them yet." I can't tell if it's a question or an observation.

"No I haven't."

I've never been too concerned with my soulmate ring. My ring is pretty much a different color every time I look at it. I guess that's a good thing though. Having a balance I'm emotions is good. Sometimes I find it hard to believe that I have a soulmate. I mean how could someone love me? They got pretty unlucky to be stuck with me.

"You will eventually. I was fortunate to find Patton so quickly." Logan gets this smile on his face when he mentions Patton's name. Patton was the friendly boy in the yellow skirt from this morning.

"He seemed very nice." I smile at Logan and he returns it. Neither of us speak for the rest of the class. The bell rings about forty minutes later.

"Well it was nice becoming acquainted with you Virgil."

"Likewise." I wave goodbye and head upstairs to calculus. A warm feeling overcomes me as I notice Roman talking to someone. I'm glad I know someone here. The person he's speaking to, I believe it's Patton, looks down and, with an excited look on his face, points at Roman's ring. I can't hear what they're saying, but Roman gets the brightest smile, which is gone as quickly as it comes. I look away and realize there's no teacher in here. Great. I walk up to Roman.

"Hey, do you know where Mrs. Shine is?"

"She always come in late. She'll be here soon." He pats the empty chair in front of him. "You can sit here." I nod and sit down.

"Hi Virgil!" Patton smiles at me. "Anyways Roman that's exciting!"

"Yeah I guess." He sighs. "What if the reason was because they met someone? Or maybe it wasn't even yellow! Could have been orange. And it was so quick..." You can hear the frustration and sadness in his voice. I twist the ring on my finger which suddenly has a red color in it. The red slowly takes over the yellow and the ring gains blue swirls.

"Patton..."

"Yeah Ro?" I look up at them and see that Roman's eyes are filled with unshed tears.

"I'm so worried about them. How could someone live so sad for so long?" I guess Roman's soulmate and I have that in common.

"I don't know Ro, I really don't." Roman shakes his head and laughs dryly. He quickly wipes the tears from his eyes. At first glance he looks completely fine, but looking into his eyes you can see the sadness.

"Sorry for bringing down the mood. Virgil! What's going on with your soulmate?" I glance down at my now completely bright blue ring.

"They're upset." I say with a frown. I watch the ring closely for a minute. Slowly a light gray color swirls around the ring. Pain, not severe, but pain. "Really upset. A lot of times it turns these colors at night." I look up to Roman, who's mouth is set in a straight line. "Sorry I don't know why I'm telling you guys this."

"I'd love to hear about your soulmate Virge!" Patton says with a small smile. "Can I call you that? Virge, I like it." I giggle and send Patton a small smile.

"Yeah you can call me that." I think I'm finally going to like a school. I frown, thinking about how Thomas is probably going to send me back soon. I shouldn't get too close to them. I turn around in my chair.

"Virgil? I'm sorry, I don't have to call you that."

"No it's fine Patton. I'm just waiting for Mrs. Shine." He responds with okay, but I can hear the uncertainty. I ignore Roman and Patton's whispers as I wait. As lovely as they seem, I just can't deal with the pain of getting close to someone and then leaving them behind. Not now. I put my hands on the sides of my head and sigh. I let my thoughts wander as I run my hand through my hair. Maybe it'll be different this time. Patton seems really nice and being near Roman just gives me this warm feeling. I really hope it's different this time.
