When they got home Toosday took the bird to his room and laid him on his desk in a pillow of kleenex he had made for him then went to work making a coffin for his friend. Once completed he wrote. " Here lies a hero and beloved friend Badonkydonk. "
Heading outside his mom was in the kitchen working on dinner. " Is it OK if I bury Badonkydonk in the back yard?" " Sure." She said looking at his make shift coffin. " I'll get the shovel."
Under the tree Toosday dug just big enough hole and lowered the bird in and covered the box . They stood a few minutes looking down at the grave then his mom asked. "Do you want to say something?" "Yeah um."
He hesitated." Thanks." " Yes thank you Badonkydonk for watching over my son and I hope your soaring in the heavens." His mom said as she looked up. " Hey Toosday, is that Copernicus?
Toosday looked up. "Nah." He looked over to the oak loaming over the house. "That is." He said as he pointed.
His mom turned to see the silhouette of a squirrel sitting on the perch that Toosday had made him. "Do you think he knows?" She asked. "Yeah I think so cause I never saw him there before without food." He said. After a few more minutes of silence his mom broke the quiet. " I better get back to dinner or start making breakfast." They laughed. Back in the kitchen she got serious and half asked Toosday.
" After today you're probably done with leaving the house." Toosday smiled lovingly at his mom. The warmth he showed in that single expression sent a message to his mom that everything was going to be alright. " How could I deprive Abaci of seeing you again?" He laughed. "What?" She snapped with a smile.
"He likes you mom." "Shut up" She said still smiling. "He did tell us to come to the station tomorrow to make a statement. You going be ok with that?" She asked. "Im going out tomorrow and the next day and next day." Toosday answered as he reached for her hand. She squeezed his and said . " You and me, we got this."
Back in his room Toosday sat on his bed feeling like he was ready to take on the world. In an act of bravery and love Badonkydonk gave his life for Toosday and Toosday be damned if he was going to let his death not mean the most it could. He saved him from that man so Toosday decided to honor him for his sacrifice by being as brave. He knew back at the park there was no more hiding. He knew at the park that he didn't want to anymore.
Ideas and possibilities swirled around his head. Maybe he'd be a cop like sgt Abaci, maybe go to college and become a scientist like his dad, maybe he'd even cut his hair. He had no need for it. No need to hide behind it anymore so he pulled out his scissors and began to cut. As he finished his mind was reeling. To many thoughts rushed over him. He knew he had to slow them down because when his brain overloads the arcing lights switch on. He also knew that he never could just shut his head down so he waited for the inevitable. He looked at his hand and no longer recognize it so he knew his vistor was back. The lighting was back.
Toosday walked over to the light switch and shut the lights off. But in the darkness the strobs emanating from his mind and traveling to his eyes only seemed to intensify. Back were his half circle lighting bolts. This time no euphoria just a numbness. He reached up and tapped his chin. It reminded him of novocaine he had at the dentist . After he touched his face he shook his hand to wake it up but to no avail. Nausea was taking him over so he sat himself down on the floor. As he did he saw it. The lighting arcs connected and before his eyes was the full circle he had been waiting for. Although hesitant he knew his destiny lay beyond the porthole that just appeared before him so he entered and as his vision cleared he saw in the distance a man with extremely large ears.
When Tooesday didn't come down for dinner mom headed for his room.
" Hey you ok?" She asked as she switched on the lights at the bottom of the stairs. Climbing the stairs she asked again. "Why so dark?" When she got to the top her heart stopped when she saw Toosday lying on the floor. She ran to him dropping to the floor and placing his head into her lap. She cradled his head and rocked back and forth crying. "No, no, no!"
