"Don't let them get into your head bro. There are three of them and two of us. That's some typical kook shit right there" JJ tells pope stocking the shelves.
JJ, Kie, and I decided to help out Pope and his dad at the shop for the day. Seeing as we have nothing better to do. Not like there's gold for us to find.
"Hell yeah," Kie agrees with him. "What was your thought process?" JJ asks Pope. "I don't know man. I guess I just kind of acted off instinct" He says questionably, "I was a cornered animal" He adds. "Atta boy" I high five him.
"Hey, Pope, someones here to see you," Pope's dad tells him as an officer in uniform walks in the shop. "Evening officer" Pope's eyes go wide. My heart starts racing.
The boys finally told me last night about how they purposefully suck one of my 'family's' expensive boats. I just laughed and dabbed him up. Honestly, they deserve more in my mind.
"I have an arrest warrant for felony of destruction of property" The officer announces. "What," Pope's dad says in disbelief.
"Hand's where I can see em," The officer tells Pope. "Yo, yo, yo what he do?" his father questions the officer as he pats Pope down. "Look at the warrant"
"You're arresting him"Kie jumps in. "You're just arresting my boy" Pope's dad adds. "Where's the proof" JJ jumps in. Oh god, what's happening?
The officer begins to read Pope his rights as he cuffs him. Everyone continues to yell at the officer. Pope and I make eye contact as the officer leads him out of the store.
I have never seen him more frightened. I feel so bad for him. I wish I could do something to help him.
JJ tries to lunge at the officer but I cut him off. "JJ don't do anything stupid. You getting arrested too won't help anyone." I say. His eyes not leaving Pope.
He brakes free of my hold on him walking to the cop car.
"It wasn't him!" He shouts and everyone turns to look at him, "It was me. He tried to talk me out of it. But I was mad because he had just been beaten up. I was so sick of those assholes from figure eight that I lost my shit."
"JJ don't-" I try to stop him but he interrupts me. "I can't let you take the blame for somethin' I did. You've got too much to lose".
"JJ what are you doing," Pope asks. "I'm telling the truth. For once in my goddamn life. I'm gonna tell the truth. I took his old man's boat too"
"JJ c'mon" Pope tries to stop him, "Just shut up Pope! Just shut up. He's a good kid. you know where I'm from" JJ tells the officer and he nods. "This was all me" He adds.
"That's the whole truth," the officer asks Pope. "Whole truth swear to god," JJ says. "I know what you think dammit. I'm asking Pope here" The officer snaps at JJ.
Pope looks as JJ and he gives him a nod of assurance. "Yeah, that about covers it," Pope tells the officer.
The officer then takes the cuffs off of Pope before placing them on JJ and forcing him into the car. JJ and I make eye contact through the window. A tear falls from my eye as I watch him drive off.
"Shit" Pope throws his hat on the ground and runs off. I'm still frozen in place when Kie comes up to me forcing me into a hug. "It's going to be okay. He's going to be okay Summer" She tries to reassure me.
If only that were true.
