Turning crimson, I made my way to the shop that squatted outside the main gate of the college, close by the sports ground, to bring her a chocolate bar. Why, she hadn't allowed me to return the favour of the noodles and cold drinks she'd brought, and of course the loveliest food she had made herself, so my inner spirits pledged that I'd to do it somehow; moreover girls love chocolates more when they're on their periods, I'd learnt this from my sister. I don't apprehend why chocolates would taste better when they're on their period, but still, I accepted it, and took long steps toward the gate thinking how Em would smile when I'll give her the chocolate.
"If it's for her cute baby face and beautiful smile, I'm doing it," I said to my heart that raced at the thought of seeing her smile.
Her smile was always a beauty, a veil over her sorrows, as beautifully hidden as one is capable of.
I returned with a chocolate in my hand, plain flavoured, because I assumed she would like it plain, for the noodles she bought were also the same. Hardly had I entered the basketball court when my eyes met a scene that took my breath away for a moment. Staggered at the sight of this gorgeous girl lying so lifeless on the ground, my heart sank to my stomach. I immediately called up the health section, which was in the mini hospital they had in the sports complex itself, for that was the place that had acquaintance with the most number of accidents.
"What do you think made her unconscious? Any specifics you're aware about?" The doctor asked me as soon as Emma was put on the bed.
"She's menstruating, and recently had an unbearable pain in her stomach, she was cramped, she said," I informed him, after the initial hesitation I conquered.
"Oh, weakness, we'll just have her checked though, what's her name?"
"Emma Rogers, first year."
"And you're?"
"Steven Woods, first year as well."
"Okay, we just need to enter the records," he said, as he checked Emma's blood pressure and all that, then went out.
I took my steps outside to see where I'd left my bag, and came in with both mine and Emma's, and just as I broke into the room, Emma seemed to move a little, which made me call the doctor immediately, who checked her again, and having her declared in a normal condition, he asked me to give her details to him so he could call her parents.
I saw Emma's face turn pale. She was almost quivering. Her eyes screeched in a way so bad, as if she didn't fancy her parents getting acquainted with how she fainted; she looked helpless and scared like a sparrow in the midst of crows. Oh, this beautiful face didn't deserve to get so pale.
Her hurt hurt me.
I felt as though I'd hold her hands, and ask her what it was that had devoured her smile, what made her fake her smile so beautifully despite the sorrow that her eyes reflected. I was convinced that only the eyes told about the soul, that the eyes were a mirror to what lied within. Her lips carving into the most beautiful smile ever, didn't quite mean her soul was happy.
After all, we live in a world where we smile when we're sad.
When she warned me that she wouldn't talk to me if I gave the details, I was shook. It made my guts twitch in the most damned way, her face paled at the thought of her parents as if they were her enemies. I agreed, after the initial reluctance, and went right away to the doctor.
