----- out of my league
"Jesus Christ, I'm coming!" I yelled as I ran towards the front door. "Knock the door down will you?"I said as Sarah Henderson burst through my doorway. The house was empty except for me. My mom had gone out to get groceries, Max had left early to go to the Wheeler's house and Billy had gotten himself a job at the community pool as a lifeguard. She didn't give a shit as to where Neil, her step-dad, had gone. As long as he and Billy were out of the house she was at peace.
"You wanna tell me why you almost broke through the door?" I asked as I made my way to the kitchen counter to get myself water. "No reason I'm just bored and I needed company" she replied, as she rested her elbows on the counter and fiddled with her fingers.
"Let me guess you wanna go to the mall don't you?"
"Yep let's go shopping, you and me", she says nodding her head vigorously, "It'll be fun Laura, I promise."
"Sarah you know how much I hate shopping" I told her as I sipped my water.
"Fine, how about we get ice-cream and then we just walk around the mall? Deal?" she pleaded, her hands joined together in prayer. "Doesn't Steve Harrington work at Scoops Ahoy?" I asked, knowing that was the reason she wanted to go to the mall in the first place.
" What? He looks cute in his sailor uniform", she says, smiling coyly, "Robin Buckley works there too" she adds, winking. It was at this moment that my heart started racing. "W-what are you t-talking about?", I stuttered, fearing that she knew my secret. The secret being that I liked girls.
"Lu, I've been your friend for almost two years now. And it doesn't help the fact that I can read you like an open book," she says calmly, while I just stand there, practically bathing in my sweat. "Every time Robin passed us in the school corridors your eyes would follow, and you didn't think I'd notice?" she ends.
"Why didn't you tell me that you knew?" I asked. "Because Lu, I didn't want to intrude and I thought you were gonna tell me soon", she replies, as she plays with the rings on her fingers. "I-I thought you wouldn't-", I started but was short by Sarah.
"Laura Mayfield, I don't care about who you love as long as I'm not third-wheeling. Now come on! Let's go to the mall!" she yelled as she grabbed my hand and dragged me to my bedroom so I could change.
