                                                   Three Months Later

"Lu, I'm gonna head out!" I heard Max's voice from the living room, "Okay!" I replied as I heard the front door close. The Hargrove—Mayfield house wasn't the same without Billy. The authorities had informed my parents that the mall had burned down and that Billy had unfortunately passed away due to the fires. The house was almost always empty. Neil never stayed home for too long, and my mom was more distant than ever. However Max and I had become a lot closer than usual. After all, we only had each other. Three months had come and gone since the Battle of Starcourt, that's what the kids had called it. It had been three full months since Billy's death, but it still left a hole. Even though Billy had been a jerk, there were times when he had cared. He had defended her against Tommy H's constant flirting, for which I was grateful. Although Billy had been an A-grade asshole, he didn't deserve to die.

The violent knocks on the door snapped me out of my thoughts, "Coming!" I called out as I ran to the front door, and opened it to see a very enthusiastic Sarah on my porch. "Why so smiley?" I questioned grabbing the house keys. "No reason," she quipped and walked back to the car with a skip in her step. "Someone's in a good mood," I remarked as I got in the back of Steve's car, sliding in with Robin who greeted me with a smile. "They're going on a date," Robin revealed, as I chuckle. "That's like...what, the 4th time this week?" I teased, "You two rarely spend time with us," I joked, as Robin laughed along. "Shut up, it's romantic," Sarah said, as I rolled my eyes. "Hey, I hang out with you guys and I spend romantic time with my girlfriend," Robin says, wrapping an arm around me. "Blah, blah, blah..." Sarah says blocking us out, as Robin and I start laughing.

"You know it's been a week since we went out together," Robin says, as I turn to look at her. "It has," I added coyly. "So..." she urges, "How bout a date?" she questions. "Hmm, no," I tell her shaking my head, as she stutters, "O-oh okay, yeah s-sure," she struggles. "I was thinking more of a sleepover," I add, as she smiles in relief. "God, you are such a tease," she chuckles, as I shrug. "Okay, sleepover it is. Today?" she questions, playing with my hands. "I promised Max I'd do something with her today," I told her, as she nodded, "Tomorrow it is!" she said enthusiastically. "Okay c'mon lovebirds, out!" Steve yells as he pulls over at the family video store. I leaned over and kissed Robin, as she smiled into the kiss. It wasn't our first kiss but it felt as magical as it had the first time. "C'mon dingus," I mimicked, as I pulled away, "Let's go get that job!"

                                  --------------------------------------------

"I'll see you tomorrow, okay?" I told Robin as I leaned against the car window, her head poking out. "Okay," she whispered, as the ends of her mouth tugged upwards. I gave her a quick kiss and started walking backwards, "Bye Steve, bye Sarah," I waved as they did the same as Steve started his car. "Bye Rob," I said as she grinned, "Bye Lu."

I slid the keys into the key frame and unlocked the door, and stepped into the empty house. I kicked my shoes off and carried them with me, I passed Max's room, which was empty. 'Is she not back yet?' I thought to myself. I dropped my shoes in a corner of my room and called out, "Max?" No sound. "Max?" I called out louder. "In here!" the younger girl replied, as I sighed in relief. I walked to Billy's room and peered in, "What're you doing here?" I asked her, leaning against the door frame. She doesn't say anything, instead she just looks down. I walk over and sit beside her, as I wrap my arm around her. "I-I just miss him," she says finally, "I know he wasn't a good person, but he didn't...he didn't have to die, Lu," she says sadly.

"I know, Max, I miss him too," I said, as we spent the next few minutes in silence. "I'm gonna miss El so much," she added, as I chuckled, "Yeah?" I asked, as she nodded. "Well, you know, you, Robin and I could always go on a road trip," I told her, as she looked up at me. "Wait, really?" Max asked as she smiled uncontrollably. "Yeah, we could go for Christmas. Robin and I were planning to go on a road trip sometime so yeah. We could ask Steve and Sarah too," I added. "That would be amazing," she grinned, as I got up. "So, are we gonna go read this new comic or what?" I asked her, as she bounced up and dragged me to her room.

She settled on the bed, pulling me with her, as I leaned my head on her shoulder. She pulled out a new comic book from her bedside table and set it on her lap. "Wonder Woman, huh?" I asked. "Duh," she nodded, as she opened it and started reading. I sighed contently, as my sister flipped through the pages. After the horrific and tremendously gross events that had taken place three months ago, I finally felt at peace. And just like that things were back to normal.
