chapter 1.—✰
Jack groaned as he walked up the stairs of the abandoned building.
Although it wasn't nice, this was his home. At least for now... Jack had big plans for Gotham. As soon as things started going his way, he planned on buying a nice place to settle in and expand his team of goons. But for now, this would do.The building had leaks and missing floor boards everywhere. It was apparently an apartment complex before it was shut down and moved to a much nicer location. Part of the building had been demolished but supposedly the lazy Gotham constructors gave up on it and let it rot itself to shreds.
Jack had been lucky enough to find a room in the building that was at a somewhat livable condition. Of course he added his own touches to make the place more comfortable. He replaced the rusty old wooden door with a steel one that required a special key and code to get in. He even replaced the broken windows and fixed the water system allowing him to have fresh water running.
Jack quickly typed in the long code unlocking his door. He walked in to his room and headed straight for the shower.
He needed to take his mind off of things. Jack had recently been struggling to form himself a team. He knew that hiring people to work for him required money to pay them. He thought of hiring people to do the work for him and just killing them right after but he knew that wouldn't be a friendly invite to new possible employees. When Jack finished his shower, he headed towards his room to change. He was currently sitting at his desk writing some ideas. He was struggling to find a way to introduce himself to Gotham. He wanted something that would make him remarkable... he wasn't going to just do one tiny crime, he wanted to take on a series of crimes that would bring out Gotham's true colors. Gotham doesn't have room for good people, everyone would give up the act to save themselves eventually. Even the best people have a breaking point...
That was the case for Jack Napier. All the events were still fresh in his mind. It was a distraction.
Jack leaned forward onto his desk and started scribbling on the paper. He figured this would be a way to get his creativity flowing. He applied more pressure on to the paper nearly ripping it. He continued to press on harder to the paper and with a 'snip' the pencil snapped in half. He angrily threw the pencil onto the desk and walked over to his nightstand.
He opened the top drawer throwing out a few things that were in his way.Once he found what he was looking for, he closed the drawer leaving the mess behind for later. He walked over to his window pushing it open. The wind hit his pale face instantly relaxing him. He pulled out a cigarette and a lighter. Jack wasn't a smoker but he had recently picked up the habit after realizing how much it cleared his mind.
He looked out at the view in front of him. He lived in the outskirts of Gotham where most of the building had been forgotten or closed down. He only knew of a few homeless that lived a couple blocks down from his building but they didn't concern him. The streets were empty and foggy most of the time but to Jack this was the perfect environment for him. He liked being on his own... he didn't need anyone else but himself. He had unfortunately learned that lesson the hard way.
He inhaled the last bit of the cancer stick before throwing it out the window. He leaned forward placing his arms on the window sill. Jack closed his eyes letting the cold breeze hit his face.He stayed like that for a couple of minutes until he began to get a gut feeling. He opened his eyes adjusting to the darkness that had taken over Gotham in only a matter seconds. Jack closed the window as he felt bits of rain falling.
He walked over to his bed making sure to turn the tv on as it was his only source of entertainment. But as his head was about to hit his pillow, he heard a 'thud' outside of his room.
He quickly pulled out a switchblade from his pocket walking towards the door.
Everything was the way he had left it. He felt a little better knowing that it was almost impossible to get through the door he installed without the key or a code. He slowly unlocked the door trying not to alert the intruder. He peaked his head out into the hallway but it was empty. Maybe it was just a rodent...
But that's when he saw the figure of someone walking up the stairs. Jack closed his room door slightly, enough to let him take a peak.
He watched as the intruder made its way to his hallway. The intruder had stopped in the middle of the hallway and took out a cellphone. This gave Jack the opportunity to get a good glance on them. They were wearing a grey hoody making it hard for Jack to see their face. He also noticed the red backpack they had on.
The intruder seemed way too small to be an adult, he felt a bit relieved that it was just a kid.
The kid was facing their back on Jack's door so he took the chance to sneak up behind the intruder.
In a swift move, Jack had the kid pinned up against the wall. He held the kid by the collar like a typical school bully. The kid had dropped their phone out of impact and their hood had slipped off their head revealing their face.
It was a young girl that looked around 13 or 14 years old.
Jack put his switchblade back in his pocket but still kept a tight grip on the kid."What do you think you're doing?" Jack spoke.
"I was uh- sorry- I didn't know people lived here." The kid stuttered.
He thought for a couple of seconds before speaking again.
"Listen kid. I'm going to let you go but I better not see you around here again." Jack warned.
He was afraid the kid would go around snitching to her friends about the abandoned building and then he would have to deal with a bunch of little brats. But he thought he intimidated the kid enough and didn't want to boost his "career" off by murdering a kid so he let her go.
He watched the girl pick up her phone and run down the stairs not giving Jack a second glance.
He waited by the hallway to make sure the girl had obeyed him and left the building.Once she was out of his sight, Jack went back to his room locking the door behind him.
He walked to his bed laying down on his stomach.
He's had a long day.—✰
