Author's POV

In about 2 hours, Kai was able to reproduce enough red blood cells to restore her energy.

When she opened her eyes, she found Tobi sitting on his desk and doing his homework. Kai opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out, so she instead sat up and tapped Tobi's shoulder.

Tobio immediately turned around and interlocked his eyes with hers. He embraced her and whispered, "I'm so glad you're still here, Kai." He detached himself from her and waited for her to talk, but Kai pointed to her throat, showing that she couldn't.

"Ah, okay," he nodded his head, "I'll make you some food, you missed lunch, anyway." Tobio walked out of his room and started cooking in the kitchen.

Kageyama wasn't the best at cooking, but he knew how to make certain foods. Since he lived with a food-lover of an older sister, he managed to learn a few things in the kitchen.

In about an hour, Kageyama managed to create two bowls of udon.

"Here Kai, it's your favorite." He handed her a bowl of hot udon that had small pieces of tofu, beef, and a soft-boiled egg. "If you spill it on my bed, I will personally kick you out," he added.

Kai gave a small eye roll, but bowed her head to show her gratitude. Tobio made himself his favorite type of udon, udon with curry. It wasn't a popular one, but he loved it anyway.

In about 15 minutes, both of them finished their food. Kai's throat felt better, so she tried talking again. "T-Tobi-chan," she announced with a hoarse voice. It was barely above a whisper, but Tobio was happy that her voice was coming back.

"Idiot, you scared me to death." Kageyama hit Kai's shoulder, but not with too much force since she was still injured. "You have to take care of yourself better, dumbass."

Kai said something, but Kageyama couldn't hear it, so he joined her on the bed.

"I didn't know one of them brought a pocket knife," Kai repeated.

"How did you manage to handle 4 other 1st years while only getting a cut on your neck?" Kageyama asked with a curious look on his face.

"I've... dealt with these things before," she responded with a sheepish smile plastered on her face.

"AND YOU'VE NEVER TOLD ME?!" Kageyama shouted with rage. Kai forced herself to give a small nod, which made him even angrier. He let out a scream and started stomping to the living room.

Tobio wasn't mad at Kai, he was mad at himself. He couldn't protect her, and he was angry. I couldn't even do a simple task, he reflected. If I can't do that, then what can I do?

It was the duo's 3rd year at Kitagawa Daiichi and Kai came to school with a series of cuts, bruises, and a black eye.

"What happened Kai?" Tobi asked with concern in his eyes.

"Ah- I-" she stopped for a second. "I was attacked by a boar when I was walking to school."

These don't look like they came from an animal, he thought while looking at her injuries. However, he shrugged the thought off and started talking to Kai about volleyball.

But what he didn't know was that Kai was attacked by high schoolers while she was walking to school.

Kai felt bad for Tobi. I caused this, I caused his anger. He's mad at me. She struggled herself to stand up and shakily started walking towards the living room. Her legs weren't injured, but they fell asleep from the lack of usage.

She found Tobi hugging his legs like how a little kid would when they were sad. His head was being supported by his knees, trying to hide from reality. His eyes were closed, but he wasn't asleep, he was concentrating.

"T-Tobi," Kai stuttered out. Tobio jolted back to reality and ran up to Kaichi.

"What the hell! Kai, you're injured, you shouldn't be walking on your own."

"It's my neck that's injured, not my le-." She stopped talking when she remembered that he was still angry.

Tobi wrapped his arms against Kai's waist, not realizing how close they were."I-I'm sorry Kai," he whispered into her ear. Kai was surprised by his gesture that it made her blush, but it quickly stopped when she started getting a headache.

"Wh-Why are you saying sorry?" Kai questioned. "I should be the one saying sorry." She pulled away from the hug and sat on the couch. Tobi did the same, and they were only inches apart from making contact.

"I couldn't protect you." Tobi's head was down in shame. He didn't want to look at Kai, he was embarrassed.

She noticed what he was doing and curled her right index finger. She used her knuckle to tilt Tobi's head up and forced him to make eye contact.

"You didn't do anything wrong." Kai dropped her hand and started examining her fingers. "It's my fault, anyway."

"How could it be your fa-" Tobio was cut off by Kai.

"I never told you, dumbass." Kai let out a small chuckle. She noticed that her voice was getting better so she cleared her throat. "You were angry at yourself, weren't you?"

"Uhhh... no," he answered.

"You suck at lying, dumbass." Kai slapped Tobi on the shoulder, which annoyed him.

"You're injured Bakachi, remember that." He gave a small smirk and forgot about his anger, but needed to ask something important to her.

"Kai, you haven't been hiding anything else, right?" he asked for confirmation.

"Uhhhh..." she stopped for a second, trying to decide if she should lie to Tobio or not. "No, I haven't. Have you?"

Tobi gulped and forced himself to say the word, "No."

Kaichi could tell he was lying, but decided to let it slide. Even friends can keep secrets from each other, right?

"Kai, I've been meaning to ask this question for a while now."

Kaichi started sweating from her nervousness as she nodded for him to proceed.

"Why wasn't your ojiisan coaching the volleyball team? You told me that he was."

Kai's heart rate slowed down as she let out a sigh in relief. "If you knew that ojiisan wasn't the coach at Karasuno, you wouldn't bother coming to the school. I knew that I couldn't come with you if you went to a better school since I'd have to pick Karasuno." She took Tobi's hands and stared into his eyes.

"I don't want us to get separated," she said as her face started becoming a faint tone of crimson.

Tobi was about to get angry at Kai for lying to him again, but he understood her reasoning. "Even if I were to get accepted into another school, I'd still go where you go Bakachi." Then, he unconsciously muttered something under his breath.

Only... Kai heard it and couldn't stop smiling.
