Chapter Three
I sidled into the school assembly scanning the auditorium for familiar faces. The headmaster always liked to do these assemblies on the first day back for a new term, he liked to present to the school, and I suppose if he just sent out a newsletter it was pretty much guaranteed that most of us wouldn't bother to read it.
I saw a hand shoot up a few rows in front of where I was standing, Cody was knelt on his chair leaning on the back of it and gesturing at me. Him and Rosa had saved me a seat between them. I smiled, slipping in amongst the students and joining them.
"We made the right choice with those shoes, you look stylish as heck," said Cody, smoothing his hair down with one hand and adjusting his low ponytail with the other.
At least my sensational fall hadn't spread around the whole school, I was expecting a few jokes at my expense at the very least. "Actually," I said looking down at my shoes. "I'm wondering if I made a mistake not wearing my old pair today." The ones with the good grip...
"You mean because of your slip and slide this morning?" asked Rosa with a sly grin.
"Ugh." I covered my face with my hand for a moment before turning to her. Rosa had a very exotic look, which was very strange when you looked at her parents. She had this dark almost black hair and this super voluptuous figure that I desperately envied. Her parents were both blonde, and there was a running joke in the family that her mum favoured the milkman.
Rosa had a thing for trying out new looks, she constantly surprised me with spur-of-the-moment changes to her appearance. Today Rosa was sporting a blue streak in her hair, something that she hadn't had when I saw her a couple of days ago. "New look?" I asked, eyeing the blue.
Rosa ran her fingers through the streak. "I thought I'd try something a little out there. What do you think?"
If it were anyone else, I'd have been unsure, but Rosa liked to rock a semi-gothic look and honestly the colour brightened up her look. "You look fabulous darling," I said smiling at her.
"You know who's not looking fabulous," said Cody, topping up his strawberry lip balm using his little finger. "Headmaster Howard. Does he look like he's aged a hundred years over summer or is it just me?"
I watched as our schools Headmaster crossed the stage at the front of the auditorium and took up the mic in one hand like he was about to start singing a solo. If you were to look up the phrase 'Rich White Man' in the dictionary, a photo of Headmaster Howard would come up. Cody was right though; his hair was streaked with grey where it had been brown just a few weeks ago and he was looking tired in the eyes, wrinkles cut deep into his skin.
"Maybe he stopped dyeing his hair?" I replied uncertainly. "And maybe didn't sleep the whole time we were gone."
"Maybe his assholeness is seeping into his body and cursing him with oldness," said Rosa.
Cody shrugged. "Maybe he's just an old asshole."
I giggled and then felt burning eyes on me. The Headmaster was looking this way, his stare sweeping across the students. I stopped smiling, looked down at my shoes again.
"Everybody stop talking and be quiet," yelled the Headmaster into the mic. It reverberated around the room and the sound of chatting students fell to silence. "Good, good. Welcome back students of Everdeen High School. I hope you enjoyed your summer break because with exams approaching for most of you, fun will be a distant memory as we drill in your lessons and your final chance to get those scores high."
Well that was an awesome thought, there was a thing called too much pressure, clearly, he'd not heard about it. I cringed and felt Rosa and Cody do the same beside me.
He straightened the collar of his blazer and cleared his throat. "Last term we were far too slack on upholding the rules of this High School and some of you felt that it was just fine to dress as though you were heading out to a barn dance." A few people sniggered at that; he certainly had a way with words.
"I can tell you now that scruffy will not be tolerated, so this term you will find that we will be less forgiving regarding your uniforms and what you do to your hair and plaster on your face." His eyes rested on Rosa momentarily and I heard her growl under her breath. "A first citation will amount in a detention and from there you will have one day to make the specified changes or be suspended."
"Talk about dramatic, who bit him in the ass," whispered Cody, rolling his eyes.
"I'd also like to remind you that our swim team made it through the preliminaries for this year's cross-school championship-"
A cheer came from the back of the auditorium, and we turned to see the swim team patting each other on the back and cheering enthusiastically. I spotted Elijah amongst them, he wasn't yelling like the rest of them, but was smiling in his seat in a sort of silent celebration. My stomach squirmed at the thought of our conversation at the locker. It was so out of the blue, so unusual, I just didn't know how to act around him. It didn't help that he was so attractive I couldn't keep my eyes off of him, it was like he had his own gravity and he was pulling me in.
"You moved on quick, so long Alex, you are but a distant memory. Then again, I can't really blame you for checking out Elijah Walker," said Rosa, following my line of sight. "Goddamn that boy should be a model, Cody do you think your mum's agency would want him?"
"He is pretty," Cody said thoughtfully. "But not pretty enough, she only signs up girls."
"That's a shame, I'd love to cut him out of a magazine and stick him on my wall," I said, still watching him longingly. That sounded super creepy, I was aware, but I couldn't help it. Most of the girls from Cody's mums model agency were regularly featured on the pages of Cosmopolitan and Vogue, the idea of flipping through the pages and finding a photo of Elijah all suited up and looking suave was almost too hot to imagine right here in school.
"I'm not sure I go in for the whole pretty guy thing," said Cody.
I laughed. "What are you talking about, you are a pretty guy. Look at them perfectly curled eyelashes," I said gesturing at his mascaraed lashes. "Your skills with makeup is legendary at this school."
"Yes I know, but I don't want to share my makeup with my man, I like being the girly one. I'd prefer him to be more rugged, like a lumberjack," said Cody.
"A lumberjack?" Rosa repeated arching a brow at him. "Like you'd kick Elijah out of bed."
Cody cocked his head to the side. "I guess you got me there."
"I'd like as many people as possible from this school to make the concerted effort of showing their support and turning up to each of the events," continued the headmaster before he was interrupted again, this time by Max the swim teams captain, who tried to get a chant of the teams name going. It wasn't much of a success with the glares of the Head really putting people off. A few people applauded but that died down quickly and Max took his seat again, looking a little disappointed.
"That guy is just craving that attention isn't he," said Cody, giving Max the onceover. "I'm still convinced he's in the closet."
"What, really? How do you know?" I said, spinning my head to look him.
"Some things you just know sweetie."
"Quiet please," shouted Headmaster Howard, though somehow from his mouth the please sounded more like a threat than a request. "The student council are looking for some new members to assist with plans for the school festival and other events in the calendar, this is your chance to get involved in what the school is doing and assist your fellow students."
He pulled his collar away from his neck as though it was choking him, before clearing his throat for a second time. "Elijah Walker has just been voted in as the student council president by his fellow council members, so please direct all applications to him."
With the mention of his name, I couldn't help stealing another glance in his direction and as I did, I witnessed the majority of the female population in the room turned to admire him too.
