Chapter Nine
Just before the end of lunch I headed back to my locker to switch my books out for my next class. As I opened my locker and reached inside, I paused spotting something unfamiliar laying at the bottom of my locker.
I picked up the unusual envelope and was it by a strong scent of perfume as I flipped it over in my fingers. I inspected the detailed drawings of hearts and chocolates and randomly placed x's. Someone had gone to a lot of trouble decorating this envelope. I sniffed it cautiously. It was definitely sprayed with perfume too, the flowery kind that I wasn't really a fan of myself.
Was this a love letter?
My heart began to ram itself against my ribcage, my palm sweating as I held the envelope in my hand and peeled it open. As soon as I saw the words Dear Elijah... written in perfect curly handwriting on pink paper, I shoved the letter back into its envelope. This love letter wasn't for me.
I laughed uneasily to myself as I realised that clearly the writer of the letter had confused my locker with Elijah's. For half a second, I'd thought the pretty envelope contained a love confession for me. A couple of my classmates walked by me still chuckling by myself in the hallway and gave me a wide berth, a look of concern for my wellbeing on their faces.
It occurred to me that I needed to get this letter into the right hands straight away. Someone had poured their heart into it and it should at least reach its intended recipient. It was a tough job, but somebody had to do it. Shutting my locker door, I headed back to the school pool, letter still in hand. Maybe Elijah would still be there.
When I reached the pool, I found it completely cleared out of students. I wandered around the edge of the pool to the changing rooms, listening at the door for any signs of life inside. Nope, nothing. It was quiet inside; they must have all already left.
I scowled looking down at the letter in my hand. What was I supposed to do with it now? A gust of wind threatened to whip the letter out of my hand, it rippled the water in the pool in front of me. I gripped the letter tighter. What was I even doing? If I approached Elijah with this girly letter, he was going to think it was from me!
I smacked my palm against my forehead. Why didn't I just post it into his locker? I was such a dope sometimes.
I heard footsteps behind me and for a panicked moment, considered launching myself into the pool to hide. Instead, I just kind of froze in place as someone emerged from behind the back of the changing rooms.
It was Elijah Walker. He was dressed in his uniform again with his sports bag slung over his shoulder, his hair still slightly damp and slicked back. He was twirling a pen in his hand and humming softly to himself. He looked so adorable that my heart did a little squeeze.
Elijah clearly thought he was alone and unwilling to explain now why I was there, I stayed completely still as he walked by, crossing my fingers that he wouldn't notice me.
No such luck. Just as I thought I'd gotten away with it, he glanced back over his shoulder and spotted me.
"Hey," he said cautiously. "What are you doing over there?"
I looked right back at him with the same level of caution. "Erm nothing much," I said smiling awkwardly. "What were you doing behind the changing rooms?"
He gave me a funny look, like he was sizing me up, then scratched his ear and laughed. "Nothing much... How about we just pretend we didn't see each other just now?"
I blushed, looking down at my toes before turning back to Elijah. "That'd be great."
He nodded; his eyes creased at the corners. "See you later, LB."
LB? What did that mean?
I stood there hesitantly for a moment as he disappeared from my view. I breathed out a blast of air through the corner of my mouth. LB, short for Locker Buddy. He still didn't know my name.
Looking down at my hand I realised he might have seen the envelope I was holding, with my zero attempts to hide it. I blushed a deeper shade of red and made a mental note to deliver it to his locker later. I shoved it into my pocket, it had already caused me enough trouble for today.
**Authors Note**
