Chapter Five

There was another note when I got home. Dad had been and gone. He was as stealthy as a ninja sometimes, sneaking in and out of the house unnoticed. It wasn't unusual for us to go several days without seeing each other face to face, only communicating via scraps of notes in the kitchen.

I started putting together a sandwich for myself, a meagre dinner, but today had been long and tortuous and I couldn't be bothered to make myself anything decent.

Dad had been missing a lot of dinners at home recently, when he did that it usually meant he was in the middle of an important case. He was a lawyer and he worked with large multi-national organisations and their cases were always as large as they were. This meant he was paid well and because of that, we lived in a nice house and I went to a nice school and dad had several nice cars. This also meant that he was rarely home to enjoy the nice house. Or have dinner with his daughter.

I brushed the stray crumbs I'd spilled on the surface into my hand and dumped it into the bin. Staring into the open bin, I crumpled his note and tossed that in too.

Taking my sandwich into the lounge with me, I set it down on the coffee table, switched on the television and positioned myself into the corner of our squishy L-shaped sofa. One of the music channels was playing, probably the last thing I'd had on, but it didn't matter I just liked the background noise, so it wasn't so quiet.

What I really wanted to do was check out Elijah Walker's Instagram. He started at our school only a couple of years ago, when I was already dating Alex. At the time me, Cody and Rosa had stalked him on social media, scrolling through all his posts to give us an insight into his life and who he was.

His best page was his Instagram. He regularly posted shots and it wasn't just the photos of him that we enjoyed looking at, it was his other photos too. He had a real knack for artistic photographs of beautiful views and random cool sights he'd come across when he was out an about.

It had been a while since I'd looked at his page, I mean, I had a boyfriend and it was a bit weird to be checking someone else out. Though it was kind of hard not too when you saw him. Man was he hot.

I opened the app on my phone ready to get a fix of Elijah Walker, when instead my eyes were affronted by a sadistically placed photo in my newsfeed of my ex and his new girlfriend.

"Oh, come on!" I yelled aloud to myself. My shout echoed around the room. It really was a big house with only me in it.

The problem with dating someone for a long period of time is that you tend to know a lot of the same people. It was bad enough that the Johnsons were family friends, our grandparents having been in business together for most of their lives. That was unavoidable. But the friends we shared that I couldn't just block online along with Alex were like my own personal form of torment.

Then again, if they were really my friends wouldn't they have waited longer than two and a half weeks after our breakup to post photos of them all together online? They might as well have just tagged me in the photo saying look how easily Mae was replaced.

I fought the urge to hit unfriend. If people noticed, they'd think I cared. I couldn't have that.

Sighing, I searched for Elijah's Instagram page and found myself suddenly feeling much better when it popped up. The latest photo showed him shirtless. Well, he was in his swimming shorts but that was basically the same. He was sat on the pool edge, his legs dangling in the water with it rippling around him, his perfect smile aimed at the camera. His hair was slightly wet and slicked back as though he'd run his fingers through it. I pursed my lips imagining running my fingers through his hair, smoothing it with my touch.

Stop it Mae! My gosh was I easily distracted. I had a purpose for going on his page and I needed to stay on track.

I scrolled through his photos. There were a lot of landscape shots of sunrises and sunsets, lots of outdoor shots. Literally lots. By the looks of it he barely spent any time at home. There were also a fair few photos of a cute fluffy grey cat. The cat was mostly in various sleeping positions or being held by Elijah. There was even one where it was wrapped around his neck like a scarf. So cute! There was nothing more attractive than a guy holding an adorable cat, he really had that look down.

I kept scrolling through. There was not a single photo of a girl to be found in his feed. Where were the girls? There was no way a guy that attractive didn't have a girlfriend. It wasn't possible.

I sped through the feed faster, eyeing every photo. Nothing. Now that was strange. Very strange. I touched my thumb to the screen to stop the feed from moving, when my phone made a happy little bleep sound. I'd accidentally liked a photo of him standing on a diving board.

"No," I hissed, checking the date of the photograph. The photo was over three years old. "Oh, dear god no!" I screamed and rushed to unlike the photo before flinging my phone away from me like it was a cursed object. Which at this point, it might as well have been.

It was one thing checking somebody out quietly online, it was another them knowing you were doing it. The damn photo was three years old too! He was going to think I was a proper psychopath. That's exactly what I would think.

My phone began ringing and I stared at like it was about to come alive and eat me. Was it him? I was too afraid to look. Maybe he was so offended by my crazy behaviour that he had immediately decided to ring me and tell me that. Mae you creep!

It wasn't until it stopped ringing that it occurred to me that Elijah Walker didn't even have my mobile number. When my phone started ringing a second time, I was still feeling a vague amount of distrust toward it and reached out with my foot to flip it over so I could see the screen.

I breathed a heavy sigh of relief when I saw it was only Rosa calling. I swiped the phone up and held it to my ear.

"Yellow?" I sang into the phone, attempting to keep the crazy from a few seconds ago at bay.

"Hey Mae-be," replied Rosa, using the nickname she gave me in Infant School. "Fancy grabbing some pizza? I can swing by and pick you up in a couple of minutes."

I jumped up from the sofa, taking my untouched sandwich into the kitchen and shoving it into the fridge. "Absolutely," I replied excitedly. Because pizza! "I'll see you outside in a sec."
