Chapter Seventeen
"Did you hear about the graffiti under the stairwell near the auditorium?" asked Stacey whilst she twirled her hair around her pencil and leaned back in her seat to look at me.
I glanced up from my book. Our history professor had left the room to attend to something and we were tasked with reading through the assignment for our next lesson. He had to be seen to give us something to do, but it would be naïve to think that the teacher believed the class wouldn't dissolve into gossip the second he left.
"What kind of graffiti?" I asked, my interest piqued.
"What do you mean? She asked, sounding confused.
I propped up my elbow on the desk and rested my cheek on my hand. "Did somebody write poetry, or did they draw a picture of a penis," I said, smiling a little.
She grinned in response. "No penises, just something about being silenced or something like that, I can't remember what Dex told me specifically to be honest. But it sounded kind of rebellious."
I felt a sudden burst of contained excitement. Was it Elijah again? Was he stamping his mark of reflective words meticulously across the whole of the school in secret? I desperately wanted to go see the mysterious words written for myself, but I had my student council thing today so it would have to wait.
As soon as the bell rung for lunch, I was out of my seat skidding down the hallway and then hopping down the stairs to Rosa's classroom. We needed to head over to meet with the student council and I didn't want to turn up alone. Especially with Danicka sniffing at my heels.
It didn't take me long to reach the right classroom, with students already spilling out of the door though their life depended on it. Josh—who I knew through Dex's friendship group—was hanging around outside the room eyeing everyone who came through the door.
"Hey Mae," he said without taking his eyes off the door. "You here to meet Rosa?"
"Yes, we have somewhere to be," I replied, following his gaze. "I guess you're waiting for someone too?"
He grinned when Sammy came out, swinging her backpack over her shoulder. Sammy threw me a funny look, as she walked forward to meet Josh. They were probably dating, and the look certainly said something along the lines of what are you doing out here with my boyfriend? I took a purposeful side-step away from Josh.
He pulled Sammy into a hug before looking back at me. "Rosa's been commandeered by Howard," he said, nodding his head down the corridor. "You might be able to catch up still."
I smiled at him. "Thank you. See you later guys," I replied, darting down the corridor in search of Rosa.
It wasn't long before I found Rosa and the Headmaster facing off near the lockers. He had this furious expression on his face, his arms crossed as he focused all of his attention on Rosa. He was giving off such a deadly aura that students were giving him a wide berth as they passed on their way to lunch, even though there was barely any space to move already in this corridor. Rosa looked equally as resolute, rarely one to back down to authority.
"Miss Timpson, you have already been asked to return your hair to it's normal colour once this week, why have you not done as asked," he said with a tone of authority.
"It's just a few strands of hair, it's not like my whole hair is blue. I don't see what the problem is with me expressing myself," Rosa replied angrily. "These uniforms are so boring and I'm so sick of looking like a cookie cutter student."
"If you are to attend this school then you will follow the rules. I demand that you fix your hair to the school's standards immediately or face being suspended," he said, his seriousness evident. He would follow through with his threat if she didn't back down. "I will march you through this school and have your parent's take you home, is that what you would like to happen?"
"Fine," growled Rosa as she grasped the blue streaked hair and ripped it out of her head. "Is this what you wanted?"
I covered my eyes and squealed in shock. When I peaked through the gaps in my fingers, Headmaster Howard appeared just as stunned as I was. He'd gotten his way, but Rosa had won the war.
"Get to detention immediately Miss Timpson," he said, barely containing the anger in his voice as he marched away from her with gritted teeth.
Rosa smirked after him. She spotted me standing just off to the side and walked over to greet me.
"Mae-be, are you waiting for me?" she said, still smirking.
"Your hair," I said, still in shock.
"This?" she said, holding up the blue hair for me to see. "It's just a clip in."
My shock turned to laughter. "Oh my gosh," I giggled, leaning in to get a look at the clip in hair. "Headmaster Howard's face... I think you gave him a heart attack."
Rosa snorted. "Serves him right." She hesitated, her eyes following after him. "I've got to go to detention so I can't come sign up for student council. Not that they would let me join anyway after that. They are very particular about the type of student they let in and I reckon I don't fit the model student type."
I sighed and pursed my lips. She was right, I knew it, but that meant I had to go on alone. I shook my head, trying to shake the panic away. I was going to do this, even if it meant Danicka Avery actually tried to rip my hair from my head. "Okay, I guess I'll see you later."
Rosa patted me on the head. "Good luck, you're going to smash it."
**Author's Note**
Well that was all very dramatic, can you believe Rosa did all that? She's certainly a risk taker! But that means Mae is back to doing this thing alone ugh oh! Please vote if you liked the Chapter and absolutely comment your thoughts below :)
